    Hi all!

I will be going to Royal Ascot tomorrow and it will be my first time in the Silver Ring. Can anyone tell me what to expect? I'm normally a Grandstand girl.... :)

Also, any tips?! I'll be browsing all the Tuesday threads anyway, but figured I'd ask :D

    Thanks a lot.

Oh dear. If you enjoy the racing and have been used to the Grandstand I'm afraid you are in for a major disappointment. I went in the Silver Ring a couple of years back (in the mistaken belief that it was like the old Silver Ring ie there as a covered stand) and swore never again. It was very wet and muddy, girls either had mud up to their ankles or were wearing bags over their shoes. We were in a big marquis about 2-3 fur from the winning post. The crowd I was with were happy because it was one glorious social picnic with a large outdoor tele, but being more interested in the racing and, in particular, the horses I was close to hating it.

I hope for your sake the weather is nice and you are happy to watch the finishes on the big screen. Personally I would try to get transferred before the day as I don't think you can transfer once you are inside.

It may have improved following lots of complaints. Hope so and hope you have a great day out.

I'm going to Ascot for the first time tomorrow and will also be in the silver ring. Given Ron's comments I'm not sure I'm looking forward to spending the day in the silver. Especially given the rubbish weather the last few days, I suspect it may be pretty damp tomorrow as well.
Ascots is always difficult to pick winners as the races are generally always so competitive. Good luck tomorrow and hopefully you will strike it rich

if any of you do think you might want to upgrade bear in mind the Ascot dress code before setting off.

as a youngster I remember my first visit to Ascot which was on a very hot day and I got turned away at the gates because I had worn shorts.
eneded up buying an expensive pair of trousers on Ascot High street. The funny thing was there loads of other people doing the same thing!

    Oh crikey... now I'm nervous!

When first presented with the idea of the silver ring I said "hell no" for this very reason. But I've been reassured it's actually not that bad, and altho it's been wet up til now looking at the forecast it's supposed to be a nice day tomorrow.

I'm going with a friend who really has no interest in horses and just wants to go for the social thing, and although I won't be able to actually see the ends of the races, hopefully watching on the big screen will suffice. Afterall, if I didn't go at all I'd just be watching on the tv at home anyway :)

Would love to get Grandstand tickets instead, but I think I'll try out this silver ring thing tomorrow and see how it goes. If it's awful, at least I'll know for next year!!

    Thanks for your replies.

Just to let you know we ended up having a really great day in the Silver Ring. From a social aspect I found it a lot more chilled out than the Grandstand, and I think the nice weather helped even tho from the previous days rain I ended up with fairly muddy shoes!

From an actual horse racing view though I totally agree with what has been previously posted. I enjoy going in the parade ring and seeing the horses before they run and obviously seeing them cross the line at the finish so I really did miss out on those bits. Whether that had anything to do with me losing all of my money, who knows :D
