One of the few I could happily listen to. Good innings but sad day.

Absolute legend - a titan of sports broadcasting. Shame that he carried on about 5-10 years too long (he was awful in Sydney 2000) and the Beeb had to shove him out rather than him retiring happily. But back in his day (ie up to and including 1992) he was brilliant.

There are so many clips I could choose, but I'll go for this one...

    Very undervalued commentator.

He avoided the prim 'Rothmans Year Book' approach of Motson (which has unfortunately prevailed in the last 25 years or so), the eloquent liberalism of Barry Davies, the dreary M25 dwelling Brian Moore and delivered sharp concise soundbite commentary.

Key statement FACF74 LFC-NUFC : "Goals pay the rent, Keegan does his share,"

RIP. I wonder if the BBC will do a 3 hour special exclusively on him?

Was he axed from doing the football in the end? I remember towards his football commentating retirement he got into a terrible habit of just shouting the score when a goal went in.
