Former boss Rafa Benitez was interested in taking Danish defender

Liverpool FC have rebuffed an approach from Napoli to take Daniel Agger on loan in January.

Rafa Benitez is keen to be reunited with the 29-year-old centre-back, who he brought to Anfield in 2006, but the Reds have informed the Serie A outfit they have no intention of off-loading their vice-captain.

Agger was an unused substitute in last weekend’s 5-0 thrashing of Tottenham and is likely to be on the bench once again for tomorrow’s home clash with Cardiff City.

However, Brendan Rodgers doesn’t want to lose the Denmark international and says it’s up to Agger and others currently on the fringes to force their way back into his starting line-up. “It’s not about 11 players, it’s about the whole squad,” Rodgers said.

“Anytime anyone is on the bench there shouldn’t be a question about whether he goes or do other clubs want to take someone on loan.

“With the injuries we’ve got, it’s a small squad and we don’t have to move anyone out. If players aren’t in the team then they need to fight to get back in the team.

“I pick the team and it’s the job of a professional footballer to work hard and respect your team-mates and that’s what they’re doing.

“You saw the spirit in our team at Tottenham. If you looked at our bench when we were scoring the goals and when we were winning, it was a happy bench.

“I’ve always said to the players that aren’t playing that it’s their responsibility to support the players that are playing. There’s very much a togetherness here.”

Pointless loan deal. But I do think we should be looking at selling him. Sakho is his long term replacement and a player like Agger shouldn't be on the bench.

I would like to see Agger and Sakho together but doubt that will happen.

yeah they are just at this stage being ultra cheeky so even if agger wants to go... tell them to chuff off. He doesn't want to go but wants to play so i'm hoping he'll get back in....

  8. What sort of figure would tempt people into selling Agger?

I'd let him go if we could get £15m+
