Since it became clear that NP was in the market for a targetman striker everyone seems to be talking about once decent players who are now past their prime, between 29 - 35yo. I think Morison from Millwall was the pick of the younger breed, but not many other names come to mind, especially within our budget.
Yeah, he's getting on a bit, but isn't he a free agent now? And maybe he could be the big target man for our wee forwards....
I dunno about Jan Vennegor of Hessle Road. There's got to be a reason why they got rid of him and t's not the hardest league in the world.
Steve Brooker may fit the bill but has had injury problems. Just looked at the released list. Michael McIndoe- wish we had signed him years ago. Has anyone signed Julio Arca, he would be great centre or left midfield.
I didn't know Boro had released Arca. McIndoe was a real talent and always did well against us, especially for Donny. I'd probably go for Iwelumo out of the strikers we've been linked with. But i'm not a football manager.
Why do we need a big target man? Id rather us play good attacking football through the midfield than watching our defenders lump it to a lump all game. Give me intelligent runs and a bit of pace anyday.
deano was a targetman, its a misconception they have to be over 6 foot..just need somebody with intelligence, a bit of strength who can hold the ball up...bring others into play etc...
Because we need to do both. Two little guys up front and relying on tippy tappy football and all the opposition do is sit deep and wait for us to misplace a pass. Have a big guy and a little guy up front and they can't do that because a diagonal ball to the big man either produces an effort on goal or a knock down to the other striker or a midfielder following up. Once they're defending higher up to defend against the big man the little man alongside him has a chance to get onto threaded passes and pace works. There's also no point having wingers or full backs with pace (eg Stewart, and Rosenior) if when it comes to crossing the ball in there's nobody capable of winning the ball. EDIT: And don't say Barcelona don't have one. They can afford to pay for the type of players that only misplace 1% of passes and play that way so moves hardly ever break down due to Barca failings. We can't pay them so when the defence sit back they know at some point we're going to **** it up if they just wait long enough.
I know what your saying but for me its too predictable ok it will work at times but i can guarantee if we have a 6ft foward we will resort to looking for his head with every other pass. For me my first choice pairing would be Stewart and Fryatt.
Ben Burgess is available on a free. I know he didnt have a good spell with County but does anyone think pairing him with Fryatt would get a result resembling the Allsopp pairing we all loved? He still comes to Hull games so I guess he would be interested
This ^^^^^^ thank **** the big man up front is a dying breed. Because frankly all a team will resort to is the long ball, and that is not what we want to be watching.
I can understand the idea that a big striker encourages a team to play hoofball, but you have to have options available. We suffered from a lack of goals last season and it makes you wonder whether our attack was a bit predictable. Maybe if we had brought on a big impact striker late on in some of those games we might have picked up a few more points.
It was clear for all to see last season that we lacked a big bugger. I don't think there's any debate to whether we need one or not.
How many goals did we get from set pieces last season? I remember a few times being amazed that Gerrard wasn't even being marked for corners when he was the only one in the box that looked like he was capable of winning the ball from a corner or free kick. With him gone if I was the opposition manager I'd be looking at limiting our chances by fouling our strikers and wingers if they looked like they were going to get a run at goal, knowing full well that although my player might pick up a yellow card we'd be able to do bugger all with the resulting freekick. Couple of defenders on the bench to come on later in the game to clear the cards and you've got 5 or 6 chances immediately gone.
You need a big man as a plan B. Too many times last year it was obvious the oppo's back four had the running of our lads on the deck n they were being muscled off the ball far too easily. Bringing on a big man at that point would've given the CB's something different to deal with and given others space to create. We were too one dimensional last season and I for one would welcome a dion dublin-esque big man.
