nines, I hope your daughter has a great day on saturday & can live with her father becoming all emotional! Back to the disallowed Phil Parkes goal. Off side was given about one foot in the Leicester half. This was what happened in those days. The laws always stated that you had to be interfeering with play but our "superb" officials chose to ignore that part of the law. Other incredible decisions to disallow gaoals included offside on the corner taker as the defence moved up from the goaline When the ball was headed the corner taker was in an offside position. Even worse, offside given against an injured Simon Stainrod laying by the touchline when Gary Micklewhite equaliswed at Wembley. One think FIFA got right was changing the interpretation of interfeering.
So that's why it was disallowed, for all these years I could never work out why. We were standing at the far end of the ground and couldn't understand what the decision was about.....feel even more aggrieved now than I did at the time.......b***ard ref!!!!!!!!!
I was behind that goal - and never knew why it was not given. I heard all sorts of possible reasons but never that one!
If you look at the game again I'm sure you will see the linesman flaging for offside & play restarted with a free kick by the touchline. Obviously, the linesman has a lot to answer for BUT I will never forgive Clive White for his two displays in the final. His obstruction of Gary Waddock to allow Hoddle to score in the first game was beyond belief.
Am I right in thinking those were he last games as a ref and that although he wasn't due to retire something happened and he had to finish. May be confused....see the 57 old farts thread!!!
Not sure Tramore but I think you may be right. Appointing a London referee to an all London final seemed a bit strange at the time. It was the only time he reffed us, but twice too many! As an over 57 the memory not's too bad about the past. The present is a different matter though!
Just looked up that font of all knowledge wikipedia! Apparently he went on to referee at the 1982 world cup, but shortly after that he was convicted of deception and resigned from the league list at the end of July 1982.
My abiding memory of any match against Leicester in the early 80s was Ian bloody Andrews playing a blinder in their goal.
Don't worry Roller we've only got Schmichel to deal with this time......he appears to be playing a blinder tonight keeping the score respectable..... Edit....City are now 3 up
That is great news. It should be quite an event. You will have some great photos. Just hope the lads will add a win to your party!1
OK, at least the Club made the decision, phew! Given the above entry criteria, I guess I can kiss my chances of being a mascot goodbye.....
Sorry if it's been mentioned but does anyone recall a game we lost at Leicester 1-0 circa 2000? They scored an early penalty after ****tu was deemed to have handballed it while laid out on the ground. We then absolutely tore them apart for the rest of the game including two disallowed goals from Rowlands for no apparent reason but it ended 1-0. Also, the match where Marc Nygaard scored from about 40 yards.
My favourite match against Leicester would probably be the FA Cup match (4th round?) in the mid to late 80s when we thumped them 5 - 2. Sammy Lee scored a screamer for us. Or then again the time we beat them by the odd goal in plenty with Ian Dawes notching the winner to ensure we stayed in the top flight. Edit: It would appear that Fillery got the final touch after all Dawes' immaculate build up - I never liked him!!! Hopefully I've got the right match in mind
Even some of the younger farts might remember our comeback against them in our first season back in the Championship aka League 1 when we were 2 down at the break and then won it at the end. Cookie started the comeback. Remember Holloway going nuts in celebration on the touchline. We never seem to be quite down when we play Leicester
I remember us playing them at Loftus Road in the August after we were relegated in 79, optimistically thinking we'd be too good for the 2nd Division, we got hammered 4-1 and I knew then it was a long road back. I think Leicester went on to be champions that season...
Leicester have sold out the entire away allocation of 1800 tickets, so it should be a great atmosphere. We will have to be in good voice!!
Using the old time warp again.....Leicester were our first ever opponents in the top division in 1968...we drew 1-1, they had signed Allan Clark from Fulham for a british transfer record £150k and they had some tenager in goal called Peter Shilton.....whatever happened to him?
