But add the context and that means little. AVB was in a privileged position compared with nearly every other Spurs boss in that period. The ones who did well nearly always inherited an under-achieving squad low on confidence, thus likely to drop points. AVB inherited a Spurs squad on the up and in the best shape it had ever been in.

Spurs played a lot of s*** football last year, but were quite literally Baled out.

 

Very poor decision but not entirely surprising. Levy wants his success to be instant, he isn't going to wait 3 years for the team to gel and get consistency. Typical of the modern game and modern thinking. Thye are only 6 points off 2nd, coasted the Europa and in the QF of the League Cup. What a horror of a season. Not that you can ignore the Man C and Liverpool results but teams do bounce back with patience. Look at Man U after they got caned by Citeh, or Arsenal after they conceded 8 to Man U.

He did very well last year. This year he lost the centre piece of his team, the player he'd quite rightly based his tactics around, and was always gonna have a period of transition. They have brought in 7 players and there is some serious talent in their ranks. He overpaid for some and probably brought too many in one go but on the flipside, if you give it 6 months-1 year, they'll all have had a good bedding in period. Was he the man for the job long term? I honestly don't know. The point is you never will after a season and a half.

Some manager is going to walk into a great situ there, that midfield talent is up there with any in the league. Well set defensively too. Still weak in attacking areas though.

 

I am so pleased AVB is not our Manager.
He reminds me of Gullitt and I cant be more uncomplimentary than that.

Anyway, its a nice little earner for him with a reputed £4.5m payoff, and the possibility of returning to Porto in the next few months.

 

AVB's a con-artist. Took a ludicrously over-strength side (Porto) to ONE title and was lauded as Mourinho Mk2. One trick pony who seems to manage as though he's always playing FIFA. High-line + slow build up = garbage. I was explaining to a Spud mate about the difference between our return to form and Spurs errant efforts - there is an expectancy at Spurs to give one of the 3 AM's the ball and let the rest take care of itself. These players are somehow always expected to carry the ball from the halfway line to the goal. There doesn't seem to be any pattern of attacking play that befits the players at his disposal, and it's easy to see how Bale became such a one-man show, because although it's a bit of a joke, their play was literally "give it to Gareth".

He's to football management what Ali Dia was to football.

There's something in that. Geography has become increasingly important. Cosmo-billionaires want to invest in an area they have a home, so it's not by chance that Chelsea (SheffW), Spurs (NUFC), Fulham (Barnsley), QPR (Hartlepool), Monaco (Amiens), Paris (Lens), Malaga (Valladolid) attract these investors as opposed to similarly-sized clubs that are in less fashionable areas (i.e.. those clubs in brackets). Some clubs gain investment if the infrastructure is good (i.e. stadium, demographics, big international airport), such as ManCity.

The reality is that football has moved on. It's become just another cog in the big wheel of finance and vanity projects, where the billionaires are the kings and queens, the government and sponsors are the rooks and knights, the players are the pawns, and the fans are…..nothing worthy of a name.

Agree with this. AVB was a hit in a poor league with a very good team, to be honest 'Big Sam' could have done what AVB did in Portugal. He came to Chelsea, and proved he's clueless. Spurs then proved they're clueless by making him their manager!

The part you mention about 8 or 9 work horses and 1/2 world class players is spot on, and exactly what should have happened with the Bale money. In relation to that with regards to Liverpool, it shows the importance of keeping hold of Suarez (although I have a feeling he'll go in the summer). Saying that in the current market he has to be worth around 100mil (in Real Madrid terms!). If he did go it would be horrific if we did a Spurs and got in a load of 'potential' I'd rather (for example) buy two 50mil world class players - only problem is if we don't get top 4 the chances of us being attractive to them is unlikely. So for me this season is massively important for the future of Liverpool. You never know, if we do get top 4 then Suarez might, just might stay. Basically this season could end in 2 ways for Liverpool - an absolute delight, or a absolute nightmare. However saying that - so far so good.

 

Two points behind the Gunners with a better goal difference isn't so bad.

I've tried from several angles to work out wuh-tuh-fuh you mean, but - nope - don't get it.

 

I've watched the game a few times and have to say, 5-0 flattered Spurs never mind Liverpool. I cant remember a better performance than the one Suarez displayed, which probably eclipsed his own a week or two beforehand (4 against Norwich).He really is one of the best players on this earth right now.

I've always hated the bloke and still think he's a nasty piece of work at times, but I'd love to see more of him in the EPL tbh.

 

He's been brilliant, that game was more one sided than when we got beat 6-0 off Liverpool at home in April.
