"I probably know what I need already," said Cotterill.

"That will only be known inside of my head and in the boardroom, so there is no point asking me. It is something that will have to stay there for now.

"There will be things we have to do, that's for sure. I've not identified specific players, because there are a few things we need to do first.

"We need things to change quickly, but that is not going to happen overnight. We have to just keep going, stay focussed on what we need and what we need to do.

"I think there is quite a bit to do. We have a fair bit of work to do with the existing players and in terms of player trading. I think a fair bit needs to be done."

But Cotterill is warning City fans to be patient and not to expect big changes straight away when the window opens.

Having slashed the wage bill this year, City are no longer the attractive proposition they once were in the Championship and their manager admits Ashton Gate will not be a first-choice destination for some players.

Cotterill anticipates a majority of his business being done towards the end of next month, and he warned: "Just because it is January 1, does not mean you can change things around at the snap your fingers and get what you want."

He added: "January is a long month. Quite often managers crave new signings and reinforcements to help the squad as soon as the month begins. But it does not always work out like that and you end up having a big rush at the end of January.

"Now that we are not in the Championship, those players who want to get a game may not want to drop down to League One.

"When you get a bit lower down the pyramid as we are now, you end up being people's second or third choice rather than their first choice. That is something we need to be mindful of.

"In the meantime, we have a group of players that we have to carry on working with and try to improve."

    Is it me or what.??

"I know what I need already"

"We need things to change quickly"

"Be patient, things wont change quickly"

I have heard all this nonsense so many times now it's insulting..

This is what reality will be..

First week of Jan. -- "We wont be doing any early business, We need to identify the right targets"

2nd week. "We have the deals out there, bigger clubs than us are in the mix too"

3rd week. We still have to apply the 5 pillars, we don't have the funds other clubs have" (some good news we buy an unknown 20 year old, as "one for the future"

4th Week. We are confident We will have a couple in before the window shuts." Steve Lansdown now appears stating that he will support the manager but it "must be the right deal for the club."

Last day of window. "We couldn't get the deals we wanted to do over the line"

We bring in a journeyman championship defensive midfielder at midnight and get told how the club have made a serious financial commitment to get us clear of the relegation zone..

The loan player plays 3 games until the end of the season.. he's crap and has no interest in being here..

    We get relegated...

The tosh coming out of everybody running Bristol City is a joke beyond belief. As someone on this site recently said, all the comments are being read from the Acme book of managerial excuses.

Fed up doesn't even begin to explain my frustration.

'What a contradictory load of old nonsense..' - It certainly is.

More than that though, it's words from a condescending and really stupid individual.

Let's give Cotterill a chance boys - I would guess he does know what we need - most of us could give him a list

I hear that Mr Cotterill has refused to watch ANY of the previous matches on DVD.... so he knows nothing about how his players are capable of performing in competition....
Didn't someone say "Fail to prepare, then prepare to fail"

This isn't about Cotterill (but does include him!) its the constant rehashing of corporate football bullshit. I'm sick of listening to it.

The players we keep buying each time come to us as highly recommended with good prospects, blah, blah..

Start ****in playing then... the goal nets up the other end.. kick the ****in ball into it.!!

Despite my words today I do think we still have to wait and see what SC can do, but unless he comes up with some innovative and special team selections that can get the job done then I'm afraid he might join the long list of ex-managers.

Everyone is frustrated and scared by the prospect of playing in the 4th division but we need to give Cotts a break.

I'm sure that this time next year we'll have yet another new man at the helm, but I'll wager the smug owner and his faceless numpties will still be there dragging us further down

I agree with the comments about corporate football bulls**t, though to a degree we can blame the media for some of that. Don't clubs/managers have to hold press conferences/briefings/interviews every day? What else can most managers say except the same tired old crap? And SC can't say much else other than what he has so far, though you'd hope the dressing room would be stirred up by the reporting yesterday that there'll be a lot of transfer activity in January. Mind you, that shouldn't come as surprise to any of the players, when we're rock bottom of L1. To be honest I mostly skim a lot of the predictable, daily "interview" crap about what the manager or some player said. Most of that stuff's just filler for the local press, especially player interviews.

Of course being over in the States means I'm much more out of touch than most of you back home. You've been seeing all the crap, home and away - I haven't. But SC has to be given a chance, and given what he's inherited from SOD, it is going to take some time - if only to try to change the mindset that SOD drilled into the squad. I'm as unhappy as anyone about how things are (and how we've gone so far backwards since May 2008), but like a few others, I've been seeing/following City since the late 60's so have seen many downs over the years. What I REALLY hope for right now, are some signs in the coming 6 weeks or so that SC is improving things on the pitch, and that, subject to FFP and so on, the club does some decent business in Jan that shows some positive intent. I can see Banksy' week-by-week January scenario coming true, but I hope we are proved wrong for once. I'm trying to stay positive in the face of a desperate situation, and hoping SC can get the team to mid table by May. I won't even think beyond that, other than a second successive relegation would be unthinkable for the business.
