........ a great actor and character had died, which was inevitable, but quite sad. Always claimed to be a Sunderland 'supporter' but I've no idea why.
Something to do with Laurence of Arabia's mother supporting us from what I read a while ago but that sounds a bit odd. Very sad. Great actor.
Sounds as odd as some kid in Ireland supporting Sunderland just because Charlie Hurley was playing for us, at the time, but never actually watching us play in decades.
Saw him in "Jeffrey Bernard is unwell" - utterly brilliant. And a Sunderland fan to boot? Marvellous. RIP PO'T
TRIBUTES have been paid to acting great Peter O’Toole – one of Sunderland’s most famous fans. The 81-year-old stage and big-screen star, who has died after a long illness, proclaimed his love of the Black Cats after tracing his family back to their Wearside roots. The actor’s father worked for many years in Derwent Street, with O’Toole himself, years later, returning to the city as he researched his ancestry. The veteran star of movie epics such as Lawrence of Arabia and Goodbye Mr Chips discovered that many of his relatives had lived in the city up until the 1920s. O’Toole would later go on to express his devotion to SAFC, becoming one of the team’s most famous fans. http://www.sunderlandecho.com/news/...ose-dad-ran-a-bookies-in-sunderland-1-6319557
