Why do the CTWD website, scarves, etc use the word 'till'? Surely in this context the word is the shortened version of until and should therefore be 'til? A till is a cash register.
till1 tɪl/Submit preposition & conjunction 1. less formal way of saying until. synonyms: until, up to, up till, up until, as late as, up to the time of/that, until such time as, pending;
I think CTWD needs a rebrand now. CTASTN - City Till Allam Shortens The Name It's got massive global appeal and will make millions.
It didn't come to me before but it should be CTNC - City Til Name Change. We could sing that at games too and it's bound to bring millions of world wide support for the cause.
Nup. Ive had this discussion professionally before and I was firmly in your camp, that it should be 'til. I have to concede that after much research and debate I was proven wrong and it's till. Still doesn't make sense to me though, how can an abbreviated word gain an extra letter at the end?
It should be City WHILE we die. "While" is often in the local vernacular instead of "until". (e.g., "When will it be ready?" "Not while 5"). I remember when I first started in software engineering and learned "while" and "until" loops. The teacher said that us Hull folk often got them the wrong way round in programs.
Definitely. I'd never heard while in that context until I moved to Leeds: Them: "Im at work 8 while 5" Me: "What the **** you on about, dickhead?"
You're getting as bad as Party with all this aggression. You need to go on a Chillaxathon. Yep, a chillaxathon. I made that word up, feel free to use it. A man of your intelligence can work out what it means.
language is a fluid thing. anyone still put an apostrophe at the front of 'bus or 'phone? come on, own up.
Can't says I do mate. I agree with language being an organic entity. It still needs free thinkers to allow it to flourish, to feed it and give it the nourishment it needs. That's why I have taken to inventing new words. I only have one under my belt( see above post from me). In fact that's not true. I once saw a woman who looked rodent like and I couldn't decide whether she looked like a rat or a weasel so made up the word ratsel. A combination of both you see! Chillaxathon and ratsel are my contribution to expanding the English language thus far. They'll probably be in the Oxford English this time next year.
I remember reading years ago, that when unmanned level crossings were first used in the Hull area, the signs said "wait while red light flashes". This nearly led to some near misses, as local motorists translated the sign to mean "Wait until red light flashes".
You misunderstand, that was a direct quote I said when I moved to Wessieland 14 years ago. Now I'm the epitome of calm since I learned to enjoy a daily Chillaxathon.
Glad go hear it. I'm in the middle of a chillaxathon right now. I can't be arsed to even have a shower.
