LEE CATTERMOLE hopes to draw a line under his latest red card after returning from suspension. Cattermole was sent off for the sixth time as a Sunderland player - and the eighth time during his senior career - in last monthâs defeat at Hull City for a challenge on former Black Cats winger Ahmed Elmohamady. The 25-year-old thought he had turned a corner with referees after avoiding a yellow card in his previous six appearances during the campaign. But after making his first appearance since serving the subsequent three-match ban in last weekendâs defeat to Spurs, Cattermole has held his hands up over his latest disciplinary indiscretion. âIâve only got myself to blame after getting sending off,â said Cattermole. âI gave the referee a chance to give me a red card. âI was a bit disappointed. I thought thereâs a lot of other tackles Iâve seen throughout the season which were worse than that. âBut itâs done now. I want to put it behind me, move on and hopefully it wonât happen again. âItâs such a fine line now. Iâd hardly made a foul all season and thought Iâd cracked it, but you mistime one, see yourself walking and you think âI didnât see that comingâ. âI thought I was a million miles from that. âI didnât need to read anything about what anyone said after the game or what pundits said, because I knew myself how disappointed I was to get sent off. âBut Iâll have to come back from it. âI believe I play the right way - fully committed - and that time I maybe went a little bit over the mark. âMaybe you have to stay on your feet, itâs that one that gets away from you when you have to lunge.â The timing of the suspension was particularly frustrating for the midfielder after he had been in good form since coming in from the cold under former head coach Paolo Di Canio. Yet Cattermole still feels the fall-out from the incident was overblown. âI came back in the team and felt I was playing well and ended up getting sent off,â said the Teessider. âBut Iâve been here before. I know what Iâve got to do and Iâm ready to play now. âIâm not being arrogant about it, but the whole thing gets blown out of proportion. âEveryone gets sent off. Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid defender) has been sent off well into double figures (17 times) but itâs Lee Cattermole... âIâll probably get sent off again in my career, but I think I play the game the right way. Iâm fair. âI took the punishment. âI think I do have to be extra careful and I think I have been doing. âIâll focus on the rest of my game, which I think I do pretty well.â During his suspension, Ki Sung-Yeung has established himself as the holding midfielder in Gus Poyetâs starting XI with Cattermole an unused substitute against Aston Villa and Chelsea before returning against Spurs. And the former Middlesbrough man realises he may have to bide his time to regain his place for the Premier Leagueâs basement boys. He added: âThe gaffer had to make a change and Ki has come in and done very well. He suits what the gaffer wants in that position. âIâll have to bide my time and be patient, but Iâm enjoying being fit and training every day. âIâm just looking forward to getting a chance, then staying in the team and helping out in the position weâre in.â
Catts will be vital next season, he'll stampede through the championship.... A must hold onto player imo.
Oh, like your style mate, put me on the spot. The answer to your question, ain't easy, but sadly, i feel this this be the last season in the prem, on this run... But as this is a Catts thread, and being a Catts fan, he is imo one of the few reasons, there is still a hope. A slim one, if he can play a majority of games.
The bookies are currently pricing /putting us at about EVENS to stay up (quite generous I think atm ), (and 1/2 to go down) but with Cattermole on board and playing regularly I would like to think the odds would improve in our favour but only long as he stops getting daft bookings- a few of his teammates would do well to mirror his commitment when he's playing well.
I wonder how many he would get sent off if he was a Boro player, I just widsh he would **** off somewhere else, he's nothing but a liability we can't afford!
Haway man, we're nowhere near down, this is a very weird season. Sheff Utd were in a much worse position, around 1990, with less games to go ...... they stayed up and we went down. Moyes reckons United can still win the league ...... they're 13 points adrift, we're only 5. We'll confirm safety with a win in our home game against Cardiff
I'm not Cattermoles biggest fan but **** me he is better than Larsson & Gardner. if Gus picks Larsson, Gardner & Ki in a midfield 3 on saturday then I will not be happy.
IF we do go down then we should hang on to all players as Newcastle did and bounce back, same team more or less and they built/bought on that. QPR are levelling off right now and could face the playoffs to get back.
SUNDERLAND’S CATTERMOLE TO TWEAK PLAYING STYLE TO AVOID FURTHER RED CARDS Submitted by Dave Williams on Wed, 12/11/2013 - 14:41 Sunderland's Lee Cattermole plans to curb his reckless tackling, without radically changing his style. The 25 year old was shown a straight red card for a foul on Ahmed Elmohady in the defeat by Hull last month, his sixth dismissal in four years at the Stadium of Light. "I've lost my place in the team and missed three games and I can only blame myself," he told BBC Newcastle. "It's a fine line. I think I play the right way - hard, but fair. But at Hull I gave the referee a decision to make." "I thought I'd cracked it this season to be honest, I really did not see a sending off coming," Cattermole continued. "I've tried to quickly move on and put it behind me because I've barely made a foul all season. "I'll stay fully committed, but maybe need to learn to stay on my feet and avoiding lunging for the ball when it's out of reach."
We can still turn our season around. I just hope that we can avoid stupid own goals and bad ref decisions in the next 5 games - i'd say all season but that would just be pushing it. however, if we get less than 7 points out of the next 5 games i'll start to get seriously worried.
