Guess it's goodby to Blackstock, then! http://www.leedsunited.com/news/art...319t2jsx04/title/blackstock-returns-to-forest Striker Dexter Blackstock’s loan spell at the club has been cut short due to a knee injury. The player had signed until January, but a knee injury sustained in training ahead of the Blackburn game nine days ago has brought about his early return to Nottingham Forest. Dexter made an immediate impact for United, scoring on his debut at Huddersfield, and he also created two of Ross McCormack’s four goals at Charlton. But, the striker made just four appearances before injury struck and his time with the club is now at an end. “Unfortunately he has got to go back to Nottingham Forest,” confirmed United assistant manager Nigel Gibbs. “He has got to have an operation on his knee which is obviously disappointing for him, but also for us. “He fitted in really well and you can see from his performances how much he brought to the team. We are sad to see him go back. “He came on as a sub in the first couple of games but then he played his part in the team. He really knitted the team really well and had a good relationship with Ross up there. “We never really saw the best of him but he contributed while he was here and I think he could have done really well for us.” Blackstock’s departure reduces the striking options available to Brian McDermott, but Matt Smith stepped into the breach against Wigan, and was rewarded with a goal against Watford on Saturday. “It is a body less and a centre forward less,” added the assistant boss. “We have a lot of games coming up but that gives opportunities to other players. Matt Smith has stepped in with Dexter not playing the last couple of games and has done very well. “It is an opportunity for somebody else. We’ll get through these games and see where we are in January.” - See more at: http://www.leedsunited.com/news/art...kstock-returns-to-forest#sthash.qycGnY08.dpuf
Growing up in the back end of Northern Ireland in the 60s, I had no connection to Leeds at all. When I hit 8 or 9, all my mates at Primary were Scum supporters - the George Best connection. In our town, in just one shop, you could buy red football shirts with white collar and cuffs, or the blue (Everton?) equivalent - with little call for the latter. No other team but Man U got mentioned, all the project scrapbooks were Red & White, but there was one kid who took a lot of stick because he was a Leeds fan. Like an idiot I though I'd give him a dig out as the underdog, and I've been hooked ever since. Through all the years I've never once regretted it, and nowadays both he and I now take our kids across to Elland Rd whenever we get a chance, though like Eire it was a long time before I could afford it for the first time.
As I said earlier, my most favourite player ever. What a talent. He used to do extra training at a local football park, Cathkin Park, and the extra was to continually run toun the perimeter of the park. Doesn't sound much until I tell you that there was an iron railing round the park, and he ran ON TOP Of IT! No wonder he has such magnificent balance.
Pity about Blackstock, but it does afford Hunt, Poleon, or Varney the opportunty to impress. If the person lucky enough to get a place on the bench, he'd better take his chance. They should look at Pugh replacing Warnock and Peltier Byram for a while and now Lees. Big incentive for others to put in a shift if given the opportunity.
Don't know if you've come across the Christy Moore song "Barrowland" about the Glasgow venue but he's immortalised in it too.
We'll according to my dear old mum, I was probably around 3 or 4 years old and recognised my name in a football team. From then on Lee of Leeds United was glued to the TV footie results every week (early 70's) looking out for our results. Too young to really understand much about what was going on ( the great Leeds team etc) but had the all white kit and iron badge and proudly went up against all the kids in their London club kits. Also used my Cub Scout sock tassels for footie. First game was Chelski in 1976 or 1977 versus Middlesborough. Was never interested in any other team except Leeds though. Saw my first Leeds game in the 80's, the relegation year. Just my luck. Lost 1 - 0 away at Spurs. Garth Crookes scored. Clarke was Leeds manager. Been up and down ever since. First home game, bizarrely was against Watford. We lost 4 - 0. Days of tommy Wright and Scott Sellars. Will always remember that day as my mates old man blagged as in for free. Met Charlton, Reeney and Hunter, ended up getting into players area and through players tunnel to pitch side. Half time met the great John Charles having a cuppa, not in any exec lounge but in something that might have been Bremners bar? Always felt disappointed that Leeds didn't look after him more.
Scott Sellars had so much potential. Didn't we sign him twice, and second time round there was a whip round to buy him?
I remember that Watford game. We are the left side, the left side Elland Road. Stood in the Kop under the new scoreboard.
Yes we did, I think we re-signed him from Newcastle, if memory serves me right, there was a good crop of players came through with Sellars when Eddie Gray was manager first time round. or Blackburn
Afraid you're deluded on this one Boggers. Regardless of formation, hunt will offer nothing and varney is f all better than paynter or Morison was. They are no solution.. Poleon needs another year at least. Potential is certainly there. It won't be easy signing a striker in January no matter how much dosh we have to throw about. I've said it before but surely we should spread our net further Ariel than the uk. A certain mark viduka served us well years back and didn't cost a fortune.
Yes,6m from celtic, pity about blackstock, but only a loanee. I'd rather give our players a chance,or sign quality in jan. I know that is not easy.
Grew up in skipton then harrogate, my dad had always beend a fan an a season ticket holder for a long time, he started taking me an my brother as soon as my mum allowed it, think I was 5 or 6 went I first went an we were playing forrest. Never looked back!
