    How did you see Gullit?
I saw him as a brilliant footballer... even iconic... but as a manager I always saw him as being a bit out of his depth.
The first word of this article sums up, for me his managerial career.

    http://www.newcastleunited-mad.co.u...s_the_worst_motivator_ever_817865/index.shtml

Arrogance cost him his job as Newcastle United boss, and ...

... Keith Gillespie says that Ruud Gullit was the worst motivator ever.

He said he would bring “Sexy Football” to St James’ Park, but he was out the door before the foreplay!

Keith Gillespie was sold to Blackburn Rovers in 1998 after an emotionally-charged three years at United.

Keith Gillespie: “He was the classic case of a manager living off the reputation of his playing days.

“It was difficult to warm to Ruud because of his arrogance.

“On a good day, he would strut around the place like he was responsible, yet when the team got into trouble he seemed unable to react.

“There was no shouting or roaring.

“He just didn’t have the ability to grasp why players would make the kind of mistakes that he never did in his pomp.

“Without that understanding, he was a terrible motivator, the worst I have played under.

“He rarely spoke to us individually and, when he did, it seemed as though he was looking through you.

“Kevin Keegan made you want to play for him.

“Gullit struggled to inspire anybody, and seemed happier alienating people, even if it was a key player like Shearer, which ultimately cost him his job.”

Oh to have KK back now.

Great player, great manager, and off the field, a great guy. Was always happy to talk to the fans and didn't mind signing autographs.

A King is always more highly thought of than a mere Sir.

I know, Peter Beardsley was the same, remember when someone started a new training course for people in my area Steve Howey was supposed to open it, but couldn't so Peter Beardsley came along and opened, handed out plenty of signed photo's as well, didn't even go and got 3. Saw him on a couple of occasion talking to fans before the games when Bobby was manager.

A lad down the pub reckons Beardo was a bit of a boozer... but I thought he was teetotal when he was a player??

He was...but his brother knows how to knock 'em back. I was in a pub down Forest Hall a few years ago ahead of a Spurs match and he was leading the sing-song from the tables!

I use to go and watch them train at maiden castle on Durham in half term
Kk made me feel so amazing his people skills were amazing.

I heard he would fine a player if they refused an autograph as to him they made their wages unless it was when the player was in private like having
    A meal with his partner

Must admit I thought he didn't drink. I remember reading he went for the same run every morning before training. Can't remember how many mile it was but it was a few. Looking at his effort levels in games, seemed the ultimate pro.

I did hear about a darker side after his playing days when he charged onto the pitch shouting and swearing at a ref of his kids game. They reckon he made a right tit of himself.

I've heard this before about Guillit. Tremendous natural talent but couldn't pass that knowledge on to anyone.
Someone said he used to stick a cone out on the penalty spot and could drop a ball on it from the half way line nine times out of ten.
Couldn't fathom why no-one else could do it. Couldn't offer any tips on how to do it and couldn't understand why people would say "yeah fancy skill that Ruud, but it won't win a game".
Seemingly just wanted to show off his talents and rub people up the wrong way.

KK's reign was just unbelievable times. Crazy. Had his faults but it is hard not to look back fondly. Football was great. Even on THAT pitch. We used to replace the ****er every season, yet come half time 10 games in, 50 odd folk would be filling in the divots!

Wouldn't surprise me, remember hearing a tale about how Shearer lost it with him had him pinned up against a wall, not long before the Sunderland game.

Beats me how we ended up with Gullit.
Even Ken Bates of all people said he was arrogant when he sacked him at Chelsea.
    Then we took him on.
