While we have our own opinions on Bruce as a manager, what is the opinion of him as a player. Yes he was good, but how good?

Where would you rank him amongst some other the other Man U defenders?

And would he be the type of defender that we could desperatly do with now.

    Steve Bruce
Bought from Norwich for £825,000 in 1987, Bruce went on to become captain and by the time he'd left had made 414 appearances and scored 51 times. He formed a fantastic partnership with Gary Pallister and won three league titles, two FA Cups, a League Cup and a European Cup Winners Cup before leaving in 1996. It was Bruce who scored the crucial goal in 1993 that gave Man United an injury time victory over Sheffield Wednesday and set up that first Premier League title win. Now manager of Sunderland.

Great player, never questioned his ability as a footballer, the rest is old news.

It was a travesty that he was never capped for England. Him and Gary Pallister were the bedrock of United in Ferguson's early days.

i seem to have missed this one today and just picked up on it.

Bruce was unquestionably the best ever centre half never to have been capped but I guess he is sick of hearing that title. I always liked him as a player and admired the way he played the game. Alongside Gary Pallister (another fantastic defender IMO), they were invincible as a pair and there cant be a centre forward who played against them who enjoyed the experience.

What would he be worth today? If Lescott was sold for £24m?

Bruce would be worth £100m in that case.

As a manger? Steady without being spectacular. I was delighted when we signed him as manager but sadly IMO, he has failed to light the blue touch paper for me in his 2 years at the SOL. However, as he is the manager, I can only hope my impressions of him now can be changed for the better in the next 12 months, back to where they were 2 years ago.

Fingers crossed for that as well.

Concur should have been given a chance with England.
Especially when you see these twats now turning their backs on the ball, he would put his face in the way if he thought it would save a goal.

"he would put his face in the way if he thought it would save a goal. " - his rakish good looks, or lack of ,are testament to that.

Think he had the chance of a cap. but it was towards the end of his career in a friendly - sort of a token appearance. Good enough, cant remember who was around when he was in his pomp. Was it the likes of Wright? Butcher? Honestly don't remember. Must have had some good ones to keep him out.

Great defender and organiser at the back but, like all great players doesn't seem to be able to transfer that passion and know how into management.
