Sunderland manager Gus Poyet ready to overhaul squad in January transfer window in pursuit of safety Uruguayan losing patience with Di Canio's signings and is planning seven new players next month Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has asked for half a teamâs worth of signings in the January transfer window less than six months after the club brought in 14 new players under former manager Paolo Di Canio. Sunderland are in dire straits at the foot of the Premier League table and will be cut eight points adrift if they lose at West Ham next weekend. Poyet said: "I am working on signings in January for sure. We always thought there were positions we needed to address and there are plenty of things going on behind the scenes. I hope that will help." Poyet publicly laid into his players after a dreadful second-half performance in the 2-1 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur and has run out of patience with many of the squad he inherited from Di Canio. Although Di Canio, guided by director of football Roberto De Fanti, oversaw a complete overhaul during the summer, few of the new arrivals have looked good enough to succeed in the Premier League. Significantly, having lost three of their four best players â Simon Mignolet, Stéphane Sessègnon and Danny Rose â from a side who finished fourth from bottom in May, the players brought in to replace them have not been nearly so effective. The cost in transfer fees, agent fees and wages is huge, but Poyet has urged the club to back him or suffer the consequences of Championship football. The Uruguayan has made it clear he will have the final say on all deals or he will quit in protest, a clear snub to De Fanti, who many blame for the mess Sunderland are in. As well as signing so many players who have been unable to hold down a first team place under three different managers this term, De Fanti was also responsible for the appointment of Di Canio, who won only two of his 12 league games at the helm. Sunderland owner Ellis Short has stuck by his friend De Fanti in the face of criticism, but Sunderland desperately need to pick up some points before the window opens to have a realistic chance of landing players with the quality to drag them out of the relegation zone. Players are generally reluctant to move to a club in serious relegation trouble and Sunderland need individuals with previous experience of playing in the Premier League rather than those who need time to settle. As a result, Poyet has changed tack, warning those playing for him at the moment that the performance against Spurs was not good enough for the club to stay in the division or for them to stay in the team. It was a deliberate attempt to crank up the pressure. âWe are playing West Ham, Cardiff, Norwich, when are we going to win three in a row,â said Poyet. âThe good run has to be now. "The idea is to double the points before January, so we have lost another opportunity against Spurs. There is nowhere to hide. There needs to be a moment when that is it, and there are no more excuses or bad luck. That is where we are hiding at the moment. âOn last weekendâs performance we would not get enough points to stay up. If it doesnât start today, this week, we have got a massive problem. A start means win, because everybody [around us] is winning somehow and we donât.â
January will tell us alot, i agree though apart from, giacc, jozy and celutska, maybe mannone, 4 out of 14 is pretty **** like
In fairness Ba/Karlsson/Mavrias/Watmore were never meant for the first team... Dossena has played 2 1/2 games? one a daft red card but good in both other games... Diakhite looked scared at first but then looked to pick up the pace of the league Roberge likes to get forward and has been alright The worst players thus far imo have been O'****/Johnson/Larsson...players who have been here for a while
I take your points, larrson has said he is happy to wait on a new contract, either he's out or waiting to see which division we are in
Sadly so, makes you question the commitment, are these players who play week in week out really bothered or are they looking forward to a bumper bosman payday?
Annoyingly however, Larsson -30k p/w, Gardner - 50k p/w, Cuellar 40k p/w etc etc Ridiculous wages, they should know they arent worth that at all
Roberge looks spot on. If they stopped ****ing off 'Captain Fantastic' and give the lad a game. Most of our signings were with the future in mind so I think writing off 10 out of 14 is pretty harsh. Overseas players need at least a year to settle in the country, grasp the language and the style of play. Look at Giroud. Ronaldo was also written off as ****e after his first season with united.
i don't understand why we're lambasting who was brought in, as per Bri and Borini's comments. The majority were devpt squad players and/or will take time to blend in. It's the current crop of ****e on exorbitant wages that piss me off.
Colback and Brown aside I think they're the least technically able players in the squad imo. Would be too bothered if any of them were sold, AJ and Fletch included. Here's who I'd keep. Mannone Brown Roberge Colback Giacc Jozy All the development players (incl the new lads) Sign up Ki and Celutska Then the rest can leave so long as it was the right deal and they were adequately replaced.
AJ has been up and down like the proverbial tart's knickers, but Fletch has hardly been a failure, surely? Just come back from injury to score a couple with bugger all service from MF...
