Stones and glass houses and all that. Although it may not be in the same vein, Le Tiss once described trying to get the ball out of play within seconds of a kick off due to a bet. DJ Campbell has furiously denied any match fixing allegations and says he hopes to play in the 1-1 draw with Millwall this weekend
As noted previously, it's difficult to rig a result unless a good number of players are in on it. The goalie might keep saving the shots, a player not in on the scam might dribble past three players and score a cracker from 25 yards out in the 92nd minute. Rigging the number of cards in a game or the first time the ball is put out for a throw-in is a lot easier, but now that the scam has been brought to light, who the hell is going to make / take that kind of bet any more?
It is exactly the same, it's spot betting fraud. Players were laying massive amounts via go betweens, probably spread simultaneously to get the best odds. Week after week games would kick off and the ball would immediately be hoofed into touch, as soon as the ball was kicked by the first player.
