Do we need Nolan and Barton?

Looking at how our first team is shaping up for next season I do not see any space in it for either Nolan or Barton so unless they are happy being squad players they could want to leave. This is what I think our midfield/attack will look like next season:

However even if I do not think there is room in the first XI for Nolan and Barton I still think it is important to keep them because of the leadership and team spirit qualities they bring to the team and if they leave then this could be hurt. Another reason is that our squad is still very small and we need competition for places and Barton and Nolan would be very good squad players.

squad rotation, injury crisis, just in case Cabaye/Benny/The Zog(if he happens) aren't all that next season.
I can see what you mean about not fitting them in the first xi, but we're gonna have a bloody strong bench! which will be nice.

Who knows, Barton and Nolan could lose form too.
Hang onto them, we need the depth, we need them in the dressing room.!

 

Barton - Yes. Footballing ability mainly.

Nolan - We can live without him but we'll lose his influence, leadership & fighting spirit he bought(hopefully he's still here bu the start of the season) to the dressing room. His goals & footballing abilities can easily be replaced though with Cabaye & a striker who can score goals at a regular basis.

It's essential both stay , not only for rotation but think of the team spirit in the team!

You can't just take out the nucleus of a team , team spirit is what took us up and what kept us up.

 

Its a good question. I would say at the moment yes. Nolan is clearly a good captain. He bonds the team together with Barton a willing sidekick.

They were our top two men last season IMO and without them we would have stuggled. So to ditch them now i think would be a big mistake.

However i do think at least one of them may leave if the right offer comes in which is a real concern.

Barton has easily been our best player and you can't trust that Cabaye will exceed his ability
Nolan is a leader and even if he doesn't play as frequently he will be a presence that will keep players in check.
Also, the actual idea of us selling Nolan will lower team spirit, and give the idea of a broken club to other clubs if we are selling our captain and top goalscorer (possibily even to a championship club)

Why don't you just read the article and work it out. I am saying we do need them, just that their roles in the team/squad/club will change.

 

The question doesn't even need to be asked though, there is no debate about it. You don't even think of getting rid of your player of the season and your top scorer/

p.s. I'm not saying you think we should, before you go ape **** on me, but i thought an understanding would be around that getting rid of Barton and Nolan would be ****ing ******ed

 

It was more to do the different dimensions in which we need them, they will both probably drop out of the first XI (not saying I agree) but they might now have a role similar to what Scholes and Giggs have had the last couple of season for Man U. So we might not need then as key first team players next season, although with Barton that is still debatable, however they are still fundamentally key for the club.

 

Agreed, i think they both need to be here atleast 1 more season.

Anyway, yes we do need Barton and Nolan. Selling them would rip out the atmosphere the club has got, and nearly everyone in the club says that is key to any success we have.

I expect Barton to be in the starting xi next year, Nolan will have a reduced role, but will still be an important member of the squad.

I have posted here a few times but mainly I post on the F1 board.

I think if we buy N'Zogbia then I can't see where Barton will fit into the starting XI because I think Pardew will start Cabaye although I would still like to see Barton in the first team because he was immense last season and probably the best english midfielder last season as well.

 

Barton and Nolan were instrumental in getting us where we are. In my opinion we need them to keep us where we are.

 

There'll be a few places up for grabs in Jan, aswell as injuries suspensions. Other than the first month I dont think having too many midfielders will be a problem.
