Redknapp: "People always think if you have two up front youâre going to create more chances but it doesnât always work that way." Thought I'd just put it out there This thread is open for debate. Keep it civil gents (and girls)
As I stated on the match thread, 4-4-2 is great when it works and suspect when it doesn't, you need the right balance in midfield and strikers who'll work back...
Key word is balance as you say Sooper, if you get that right you can be succesfull with whatever formation you choose. David Mac has it 100% spot on in his latest tweets (imo). David McIntyre ‏@davidmcintyre76 Smart-arse tweet I know but teams without QPR's resources see them as potentially soft & would like to get 1v1 in key areas. 4-4-2 lets them David McIntyre ‏@davidmcintyre76 Just as importantly, it's NOT more attacking. One up with as many as four bombing on is essentially more attacking than 4-4-2.
It clearly didn't work today, especially in the first half. I'd like to see NW's old 4-2-3-1 formation given a go, I think it would work well with the below: Normal back five ------Barton - O'Neil ----- Phillips - Kranjcar - AJ/Hoilett ------------Austin ----------- I don't mind 4-5-1, but a 'flat' 4-5-1 can be irritating to watch at home!
Players and teh team just to up their games and then formation is not an issue not wasting my time playing fantasy football
But Flyer said Redknapp is a negative moron who should be sacked because he wasn't playing 442? There must be some kind of mistake?! We were supposed to be making soooo many more chances? ... In all seriousness, we just carried on in the same vein a Tuesday's match. It wasn't a great performance with 442 then, and it wasn't today either. The extra midfield control 451 affords us has been undervalued in my opinion. Hope we revert to it Vs Blackpool.
David McIntyre ‏@davidmcintyre76 Just as importantly, it's NOT more attacking. One up with as many as four bombing on is essentially more attacking than 4-4-2.[/QUO This is true for some sides, but not us - we don't get anyone 'bombing on' and Austin is left high and dry.
The positive side of me wonders whether they're just still taking time to adapt to 442. Must take time to adjust having played a different formation all season?
my positive side tells me we are still a team in the making, regardless of formation, and are really still in the 'gelling' period. We haven't quite found the right combo yet so i think it's astounding that we are where we are in the league. This team was really only cobbled together in the summer so despite a couple of lacklustre performances of late I think (hope) our best is yet to come.
We didn't play 4-4-2 today. It was far closer to 4-2-4 with very big gaps betweeen the front two & Barton/Carroll. I like the idea of Johnson & Austin both playing but lets play a system that will accomodate them. We didn't today. It wasn't until we removed the two wide players that we created anything.
This is my thinking too Chaz. According to Robbie Savage on 5Live tonight, it takes about 6 months for a player to really feel that he really belongs at a club and becomes fully immersed into it.
Austin and Johnson are too similar. If they arn't getting the ball to feet or in and around the box then we need that 'big target' type to partner one of them. We are not 'threading' passes through to are strikers,so we saw a lot of balls in the air and I think I could have counted the amount of headers we won on my thumb!
