West Brom are back on the trail of Sunderland midfielder Craig Gardner and could be lining him up as cover if Youssouf Mulumbu goes. The Baggies were strongly linked with the former Aston Villa and Birmingham City star in the summer when he was expected to be a casualty of a Paulo di Canio clear-out, but he stayed at the Stadium of Light and it was the Italian that eventually moved on. West Brom have maintained an interest in the 27-year-old Solihull-born midfielder and may be ready to make their move in the January transfer window - but only if a gap opens up in Steve Clarke's 25-man squad. Mulumbu's comments about wanting to play Champions League football didn't appear to bother the Baggies head coach, and the Congolese midfielder did claim he was misquoted, but Albion do appear to have a back-up plan in place with Gardner. West Brom's chief scout watched Gardner play 80 minutes in Sunderland's 4-3 home defeat to Chelsea at the Stadium of Light last night.

He seems to be struggling to adapt to our passing game, so if we can get a good price for him and get a decent replacement, then I would say sell.
Alfie has a touch like an elephant and doesn't look comfortable on the ball, I also find his passing suspect. Would folk rather we sold Alfie and Gards and pool the wages and and fees together and sign someone who actually has the attributes to play our style?
I disagree with that like. Reckon he's quite comfortable on the ball. And although his long-range passing is absolute ****e, under Gus he could play a role that wouldn't require long range passes. Would love to see him in the team
time to say bye, bye Gards. gets caught on the ball too often, makes stupid challenges and looks inept based on his last 2 outings....and even the sub cameo before that. if he has one more ineffective game, that has to be time up...
Disagree too Bri. He can't head the ball and can't shoot but actually, on the ball he was comfortable and tidy. His energy was good too. I'd have him over Gardner any day. Mind, if we sold both and bought a better all round option I'd be very happy too.
