Said this on these boards recently but was shot down in flames with a "Behave" comment.

    Anyone else's thoughts?

As Shelvey just banged 2 in against the team that was in 5th (Newcastle) while Allen puts in 2 anonymous performances?

Did you just see that goal? Was hardly an amazing goal <doh>

Shelvey scored for us too, but he isn't top 4 material, if we want top four then we need to be looking at better players than Shelvey and tbh Allen.

I'd look at selling Allen in the summer and replace him with someone with quality.

1 was an own goal, the other was terrible goalkeeping. He also should have been sent off before he scored his goal for a headbutt.

He has talent, no doubting that but he's always liable to being sent off as his temperament is poor. BR said he didn't want to sell him but he would have to fight for a place and Shelvey didn't want to. 2 ways of looking at it, didn't have the fight and desire to stick it out and earn a place, or wanted to go somewhere where he was guaranteed first team football.

    Spearing > Shelvey > Allen > Fellaini :1980_boogie_down:

Got to say I don't rate Allen at all but Shelvey is a loon. Good on form and yeah I'd agree he is better than JA but in all honestly we need better than both of them. At least we got decent money for Shelvey so can't say I'll ever complain about us selling him.

  6. I seriously think I'd take Allen over Shelvey. However, had I got the option to sign either I'd sign neither <ok>

ah come on.... newcastle got a couple of decent result in a row they can't defend and are awful.. 5th... pah.... shelvey... you paid his value put it that way. never a top 4 player... just cos allen isn't one either doesn't mean you got some bargain.

He could be a great player if at least two things were to happen.

1.He reigns in his temper... He has had so many rash challenges, headbutts, and other things that he's just too much of a liability to have on the field.

    and

    2. He becomes more consistent. When he played for us, I never knew who to expect. The Shelvey who was afraid of the ball? The Shelvey who would hit a 40 yard screamer? The Shelvey who would tackle from behind and get a red card? All 3 at once?

I just don't see both of those happening, so I can't say I'd rather have him then Joe Allen. Too much of a liability in the fact that he has SO many red card worthy challenges.

Shelvey is a very interesting case.

I genuinely thought he would be a top class player in the future, and one who could replace Gerrard. At u21/reserve team level, he was head and shoulders above everyone. He would dictate the game, great range of passing, tackle etc etc. He had a swagger about him.

However, put him in the first team and he lost his swagger and he looked completely out of his depth.

The more I see of him now, the more I lose faith - his game intelligence is really poor and temperament is worse. Sort these two areas out and you could have a special player ...

This is a non-argument! Neither is good enough for LFC; therefore the argument is academic.

Jordan Rossiter is better than Joe Allen <whistle>. Neither are good enough really but I would say Shelvey has more potential so I would take him.

To say that Shelvey is better than Allen is not a controversial statement - quite a few players have been better than Allen over these last two seasons.

I agree that Shelvey is an enigma of a player. He can play great and he can lose it all. Think the best sum up of him was our games vs Swansea where he scored a goal and made 3 assists in a game that ended 2-2. He is young (only 21) and with the right development he might become the next Stevie - he has the natural raw talent - but with the wrong development he'll be the next Joey Barton.

I don't believe he'll ever hit the heights of a really great player but he may well turn out to be ok....ish.
