He managed Nottingham Forest to a record six consecutive home defeats and something like 7+ hours without a goal. He brought Sean O'Driscoll in to help him and it was he who coached Forest out of the mess they were in. Still he talks a good game.... "There are some good players here. We’ll need to strengthen a bit and get the right blend of youth and experience but we’ll not look back. I’m a great believer in only looking forwards. I can’t change the past but with a bit of hard work and some quality the confidence will return I’m sure and the lads will bounce back and start winning again. There’ll be no hiding place. We need everyone to pull together; it’s going to be tough and there are no easy games at this level. I think we’re too good to go down but the table doesn’t lie. I’ve got my eyes wide open about the task ahead but the chairman and I had an honest exchange of views. We’ll take each game as it comes and give it our best shot starting at Tamworth on Saturday in the cup which will be a really hard game; it’s their cup final after all. But the league is our bread and butter and that is where we’ll be judged. We’ve a mountain to climb but we have to believe we can dig ourselves out of it. You can be sure I’ll give 110%; I can’t wait to get started. ................" If only this was a completely inaccurate parody of what City fans will have took forward to listening too every week. Three and half years! No-one other than Alan Pardew has a contract like that. Unbeeeeeeelieveable!
Alleged to have said in a post match interview- We would have won 1-0 if they hadn't scored 2. Guess they lost 2-1 that day then.
Woke up over here to read todays news. That it's Cotterill is no surprise given the strong rumours over the past few days. However, 3 1/2 year contract? That must have been a make-or-break for SC given that I thought City were trying to avoid long (expensive to pay off) contracts. And I'm mildly surprised to read that Cotterill was the only candidate that the Board considered - again, rumours suggested this was the case, but as I posted yesterday, I'd have liked to have seen a proper selection process this time around rather than what appears (again) to have been a knee-jerk decision with more than a hint of the old-boys-network about it too. Anyway, Cotterill it is. Despite all of our misgivings, for the sake of our club (and our sanity!) I really hope he proves us wrong and makes a decent fist of it. If we can start winning a few games, play better football and are out of the bottom 4 in May, I'll be relatively happy. It's got to be about the next 6 months right now and surviving in L1, not the 3 years of his contract beyond that. Now he's in place, I really hope everyone gets behind him.
Bugger me, we really are a "nothing" club these days aren't we? Listening to BBC 5Live online this morning (mid afternoon back home), and in the past 3-4 sports desk bulletins, they've mentioned Crawley Town appointing John Gregory as their new manager today but no mention of City and Cotterill. wow...Crawley are more newsworthy than we are.
They didn't show it though, 12 month rolling contract basically says to me, if you're **** we don't have to take you on for the next year and we haven't got to pay you a massive pay off if you leave. 3 and a half years says to me. We're trusting you and have a lot of confidence in you. Get it right because we think you're the right man
Steve Cotterill, Cotterill! He's 6 foot and 1 inches tall He's better than O'Driscoll! Steve Cotterill, Cotterill!
On Talksport they mention that the Oxford manager has ben allowed to talk to Portsmouth about their vacancy. But no mention of us. We have become nobodies.
Although we have become nobodies it is the board that has made us that way and let's just hope that the appointment of Steve Cotterill will change that image. If they have given the commitment of a 3.5 year contract let's also hope they have given him the commitment of total support and resources to do the necessary business.
To be fair, he's the first guy since Johnson who has been the manager, and not the head coach. Perhaps this means that he'll get more responsibility than his predecessors? I think there's a lot more to this than just a title. I'm not a huge fan of the appointment. I've got nothing against the guy. For all I know he could be the perfect person for the job. My issue is that this appointment was probably made a week or more ago, and knowing our board he was probably brought in to push a failed methodology of running a club. I hope to be proven wrong, and to see Cotterill start winning some games. I also hope that he is vocal enough to push against the board if they aren't providing him with what he needs.
Glad I didn't comment, however in just a years time SC come be enemy number one, that's how football works.
although I NEVER COMMENTED, my feeling was, and still is not 100% I was maybe less than 40- 50% in favour of him, but given my support and now about 90% sure of him, I still think he is sailing close to the wind, BUT should we get February with more than 12 points from the 21 will be happier !
I am very relieved that my comments were positive at the time. And still are now. And unlike some other people, I don't see why we have to expect this success to end. Next season, god willing in a new Division, we can hope to be challenging for a play-off place if we are lucky (warm cat bounce, or whatever it is), and then seeing where we go from there. I genuinely believe that City can make the Premier league in my lifetime. Mind you, I am only 5 years old.
