Why would he leave a team top of the league for a team that's now 4 points off the drop? They would want some compo too you would have thought?

Because Portsmouth's a less pretentious city than Oxford.

But to balance things out, Pompey has a MUCH bigger chip on its shoulder.

Clearly you haven't seen the postings of some of the Southampton fans on the Pompey News site. Anyone who signs every single post with WTFILN should be banned for being an idiot.

Also, we have the coast! Who wouldn't want that? :D

    From the BBC

Portsmouth have made an official approach for Oxford United manager Chris Wilder, reports BBC Radio Oxford.

Pompey sacked Guy Whittingham on Monday after just over one year as boss.

League Two leaders Oxford's chairman Ian Lenagan would not confirm if Portsmouth had made an official approach, but said he was not concerned by any interest in Wilder.

"One club, who are a failing club, comes in for him. That tells you he is doing a great job," Lenagan said

Ouch, that is a zinger and a half. <laugh>

Surely this comes down to money again though? Like i said there will be compensation involved plus he would want more than he is being paid now?

Details a bit thin as, according to our CEO, we've approached a number of clubs asking if we can talk to their manager. Which, if true, admittedly sounds a pretty rubbish way of filling a vacancy. But I'm sure Saints fans will happily point out that's fairly standard for our club.

So you never know if there's compensation to be paid (and no-one's actually said we can't pay any) or how much League 2 bosses earn - it's probably not a huge amount and you never know what clauses people have built into their contracts.

As for Ian Lenagan - pot, kettle, black. He'd know quite a lot about failing clubs with Oxford what with their falling attendances and incurring huge losses. Yes, that's right, it's a Pompey fan talking about the poor running of a club.

And the Pompey contingent should put on their best clothes, go and see him, promise him anything to get him, because he'll be the best manager you'll likely to get to say... yes, I'll do it.

If you want unconventional, try Martin Allen. You'll either sink like a stone or storm the division. It depends whether your players respect his methods or not.

Steve Coppell's just become available as well. Maybe Barker and himself will team up again?

I don't understand why they've approached so many managers publicly, at this rate it will look like they've ended up with their 5th or 6th choice to take over as manager, hardly a good impression. It might put others off taking the job, knowing that they aren't the preferred choice.

Always more managers than jobs...would guess you were really looking for work if you were only 4-5th for Pompey.

Portsmouth should never sacked their manager in the first place. They are in no position (financially) to did that. Now, who want to be their manager? As a neutral, it makes me sad that such big club as Portsmouth now lingering in the bottom of League 2. Premier League and Football League will lose one of its better club if Portsmouth are relegated again, or worse cease out of existence.

I presumed that there must have been some bust up...surely if it was only results they would have looked around for a replacement before sacking him. I know we got criticised for lining someone up as a replacement for Adkins, but it made more sense than when we went without a manager after Pardew was sacked. Made me think there was a bust up before Pardew was sacked but not when Adkins was. The Portsmouth sacking came without warning, so there must have been some row.

So the first person they thought of and who worked with their chief exec before. What a surprise.

As for Coppell, what the **** does he do, apart from having meltdowns now and again? He'll be the Joe Kinnear of the South Coast at Pompey. Taking a wage that PFC would probably be better used spent on youth team or facilities.

Apparently, Steve Coppell will work as Director of Football for 'free', as he apparently did whilst at Crawley. Amazing in this day and age, isn't it ?
