Hey are you some kind of geek? Then check this out http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/desktops/how-to-turn-your-raspberry-pi-into-an-xbmc-media-centre-50008599/
I have the xmbc running on a old superfluous pc but it takes up too much room just thought the raspberry pi maybe the way forward and hdmi the bugger into my tv ... btw hundreds free of tv programs are available on the xbmc addons incl live sports movies stream in hd too
download xmbc to a pc first mate se if you like it http://xbmc.org/download/ suggest you try the Ice addon first
My mates had one for a while and he doesnt even watch footy. He says he's happy with his especially for what it cost
I've got a Pi, and it is capable or running XBMC well, but I use one of these connected to the main telly http://www.amazon.co.uk/XstreamTec-Linux-XBMC-Midnight-Streaming/dp/B00CAT7XZY The Pi is a bit too techy looking for the living room with wires coming out of every side and a USB hub hanging off it, whereas this blends in with the other stuff well, plus it's all set up ready to go (apart from the footy add-ins), and comes with remote etc. If you do go with a Pi, then use the OpenElec distribution, not raspbmc.
When you've got some time mate i'd catch up with this weeks Gadget show. There's a section on making your tv a smart tv with a variety of devices at reasonable prices.
