Tonight has been panackalty, chianti, me on here and a visit for tea from one of the daughters who has talked constantly to (at) her mam! Talked about Christmas. Talked about life. I love living. Some might find this boring. I find it class. x
Just been ripped back 40 years in a split second. Loved it. My mum taught me dad how to make this and other dinners before she died. What pub still serves this?
I know the stables do it. My recipe - hope you at least try it; Parboiled carrots leek finely sliced onion cooked sausages, cut into bite-sized bits fried bacon corned beef. Cover this lot with gravy of your choice (not telling you mine, but it does include subtle herbs. VERY thinly sliced tatties. (I dot mine with butter) in a layer on top. Into a hot oven til tato is browned and crispy. Ta - ****ing - da x
Joe Kinnear thought it was an Italian player !. And have you tried diced cooked leeks, bacon and cheese melted over them, beautiful !.
Bonny, where are the Stables? I've got family in Fence Houses and Dubmire and next time I'm up I'm going to check it out.
Good for you Bobby fella. Glad you've had a good evening. As for panackelty, a once frugal meal would cost a fortune today to feed a family today. Av you seen the price of tinned meat? let alone bacon and potatoes. used to be one of the cheapest things you could make.
Sandy Come off the Durham A690 towards Sunderland At the Board Inn, turn left. A mile up that road is a mini roundabout. Hang a right. Stables on your left 300 yards down, behind a stone wall. Alternatively, I'll make you 6 individual panac's for a tenner. x
Corned beef over here is nice cut of topside that has been boiled in brine and rolled in peppercorns and is a waste of a cut of beef. Not many local folks go with the tinned stuff and look down their noses until they taste the wife's corned beef pies. The grand kids love a corned beef hash.
I made a batch of 'corned beef and potato squares' the other week, as was feeling a bit homesick. Reminded me of weekends round me various aunts/uncles when I was a nipper. women in the kitchen; blokes in the front room talking about footie and smoking pipes. kids messin' about outside until it got too dark/cold and grub was ready. Happy days and this has brought those memories back again. Only 2 weeks until 'UK time', but sadly no north east & I doubt they'll be serving either dishes down the east end, the slippery eel eating bastards. At least I'll get a couple of salt-beef and mustard bagels down Brick lane to compensate.
Have been living in South Africa for the last 32 years and have not tasted panackalty in all that time, you people really have my mouth watering, hope you don't mind if I use your recipes.
The simple things in life are best and usually don't cost a penny. I'm never happier or richer than when I spend time with my daughter. Costs nothing but is a priceless moment.
