http://www1.skysports.com/football/...oyet-placing-emphasis-on-youth-at-sunderland? Gus Poyet admits he will be placing greater emphasis on youth development as he builds for the future at Sunderland. A busy summer of transfer activity at the Stadium of Light saw former boss Paolo Di Canio go in search of ready-made first-team stars. That approach has backfired somewhat, with results on the field offering little return on the sizeable investment made off it. Poyet will continue to bring in players from afar, with proven performers vital in the Premier League, but he has also outlined plans to bring more players through the academy system - with the ultimate goal to work with an elite group which offers the perfect blend of experience and promise. "You need a system throughout the club. You can call it an identity." Gus Poyet He told the Sunderland Echo: "Eventually I would like to have 23 players in the first team, 24 max. "And then I want to know 100 per cent that I've got five players in the U21s that, when I need them, they can step up. "I'm not talking about five coming up together because that wouldn't be easy, but one at a time in different positions. "Then you know if something happens in a position and you get an injury or suspension, you've got two players who can give you some competition." Poyet is also looking for a philosophy of football to be embraced by all levels of the Sunderland set-up. He added: "You need a system throughout the club. You can call it an identity. "I don't want the U21s to be exactly the same as the first team. But the general basics, yes, there should be a similarity, and with the U18s as well. "They need to have a similar idea so when I need two to train in international week, they're okay and they feel comfortable, they're not suddenly doing the opposite to what they're used to in training." Exactly what I (and I am sure many other fans) think should be happening at the club. I said when Poyet took over, Bally should be asked to ensure the footballing philosophy is the same throughout the squads. The more I hear from Gus, the more I think that even if, god forbid, we are relegated this season then Poyet should be kept on. Its not his fault on the mess he has inherited and we need some consistency at the club. A bit of faith in him and I think long term success could be a real possibility.
Sorry Mr Poyet but this just isn't the Sunderland way. We have an established system of having no rational plan or scouting system. Our reserve/youth teams play whatever system the ex-Sunderland playing coach has decided is best and doesn't mirror the first team requirements. We buy plodding ex-Man Utd players who are here for an early pension. So take your lah-di-dah modernist clap trap and shove it up your poncy foreign arse!
Bout time every tier of our playing staff were singing from the same hymn sheet. It's just common sense.
Oh my god! He's not trying to bring some professionalism to the club is he? It'll all end in tears! Not sure I can cope after all these years! And if we do get relegated, he's only likely to bring us straight back up with this sort of attitude and build our hopes up all over again!
I personally think we have stumbled on the manager we have always wanted by accident. He appears to think well ahead and have an idea of exactly what he and us want.
But that'll mean we'll have nothing to gripe and moan about, except "how good the lads were. Again". Its the end I tell you!
He's destroying our great tradition of abject failure and disappointment. We'll have nowt to gripe and moan about on this forum if he gets us playing well!
