    Or keep faith in Mannone?

GUS POYET has challenged Keiren Westwood to regain his starting spot after admitting that leaving out the keeper has been one of the hardest decisions of his Sunderland tenure so far.

Westwood is expected to remain on the bench for tomorrow’s crunch clash at fellow strugglers Stoke City, with £2million summer signing Vito Mannone continuing in Sunderland’s goal at the Britannia Stadium.

The Republic of Ireland stopper, who spent last season playing second fiddle to Simon Mignolet, suffered a nasty collision with ex-Sunderland defender Paul McShane at Hull earlier this month and was ruled out of the Capital One Cup clash with Southampton four days later.

But head coach Poyet then opted to keep faith with Mannone for Sunderland’s last outing against Manchester City, and the Italian responded with the Black Cats’ first Premier League clean sheet of the campaign.

Mannone is yet to concede in a game-and-a-half of Premier League football for Sunderland and Poyet says Westwood has a fight on his hands to oust the former Arsenal stopper.

“It’s been one of the toughest decisions I’ve made here to change the goalkeeper,” said Poyet.

“It’s difficult to explain how unfair it was on Westy, but that’s my job.

“Everything went alright, so credit to Vito and now Westy needs to fight for his place.

“He will have an opportunity eventually, but it’s up to him now to get his place back.”

unfair to judge, as we havent seen westwood since the club starting (properly) playing to Poyet's style.

Mannone came in and has done brilliantly, how can we drop him when the manager is telling the players that they are playing for thier places? I must admit it's been ages since a saw a keeper so comfortable with the ball at his feet, he's like an extra defender at times.

Could we put Hulk Hogan in goal this weekend, im sure there will be a lot of balls coming in from the top ropes against Stoke!!!

Got to say though I quite like both our keepers.

Mannone can't be dropped at the moment. It's that simple.

Westwood don't look like he can cut it IMO. He's been replaced by 2 keepers. I don't trust Westwood with set pieces. And I think he's partly to blame with the amount of set pieces with conceded this season.

No he hasn't - he's got injured/ill and the players who have come in to his placed have played well and made themselves undroppable. He's never been dropped by the club - just got injured or ill to lose his place. If you really were a "supporter" you would know this

Mannone isn't exactly a skinny runt mate and if Wes is playing i doubt he'll have much to contend with in goal. The City players never got near the keeper.

Fletcher gets injured, and do you think altidor would keep him out the team when fletch was fit again??

Do you think any keeper would have kept mig out our side if he got injured last year?

If a player was that good, he would get back in the side. Simple as that.

Do you have any idea about football. You are comparing, effectively, Altidores' ability as a striker to Mignolet's ability as a keeper? Really?

If Altidore had 10 goals and 5 assists would Fletcher have been an automatic selection? No he wouldn't.

Also - If mignolet got injured and Westwood came in and did the business, no Mignolet wouldn't have got back in unless he was in favourable terms with the manager. Cattermole (who I rate) will currently not get back into the side because of how well Ki and Colback are playing. So It's really a stupid comparison you use

I think your missing the point.. Ok if altidor got injured and wickham replaced him and scored goals, he would stay in the side, because altidor isn't scoring goals.

So Westwood got injured and prior to that he was letting in goals left right and centre, vito has replaced him and let in very few, plus kept a clean sheet (something Westwood didn't do)

So prior to westwoods injury, IMO he wasn't playing well enough, for a premier league keeper he also isn't brave enough, again IMO.

But me and poyet must share the same opinion because he chooses manone.

If Westwood was playing well before he got injured he would have replaced manone, end of..

Now I return your question, do you know anything about football.. Because to me I think you should stick to your music.
