More added as we go through the week. http://qprreport.proboards.com/thread/37715/previous-encounters-charlton-athletic
Thanks for that Bushman. Presumably the Charlton FA Cup 4th round match you feature is the one you were telling me about before the Media meeting last week? Are programmes where Vic Mobley actually played worth any extra?
Love those trips down memory lane Bushman - on 27 November, 1971 as a young lad I travelled up from Hampshire, alone on the train, to watch a Division Two game at the Valley that we lost 2-1. I recall I was surprised how large the ground was, on a freezing afternoon up there on the windy terraces, eating a bag of roasted chestnuts to try and stay warm. That was the one and only time I saw us play Charlton Athletic, so this coming Saturday will mark the second occasion, 42 years later. I only hope we manage a win this time around - COYRS.
Hey Kilburn, It's getting close now. Are you all set? Don't forget the camera Saturday. See you then.
Take a butcher's, Kilburn. http://qprreport.proboards.com/thre...ters-charlton-athletic?page=1&scrollTo=339782
Wow, Bushman, you have everything tucked away in your vault. Since I'm generally a bit of a hoarder (my kids tell me that), I likely have that match programme tucked away somewhere - I remember that game like yesterday, I see we were 2-0 down at half-time, but could only pull one back. Looking at our team that day, on paper, you would have thought it would have been an easy win.
So Bushman, is that your actual marked match programme from that day? If so, interesting that 42 years ago we shared that game together? Looks like poor old Dave Clement, always so reliable for us, was our MOM.
Yes Kilburn it is my programme and I was there. I gave Clement 8/10 for not only being Rangers best player on the day, but also for the 40 yard volley he scored that day.
Fantastic stuff - do you remember how cold it was that day? They served hot roasted chestnuts & peanuts in paper bags I recall. Travelling up from Hampshire on the train to Waterloo, my Dad gaves me directions to the nearest underground station to get off at and armed me with an A-Z. I loved the Dave Clement/Ian Gillard (not playing that day?) full backs combination. Very sad what happened to him after his injury. At the Valley I was up on a vast terrace behind one of the goals -I was amazed how large the Valley ground was. Don't seem to recall back in those days if there were Home & Away designated ends? My Grandfather & Father were regular R's supporters at Loftus Road for many years - do any membership records exist from those times, likely 1925-1939 for the pair of them, and I imagine the post-war years for my Grandfather (he died 1961), but sure he would have continued following the R's whilst in good health? He worked as a clerk in a stockbrokers office in the City and managed/coached the firm's football team (I have an old photo). My Dad always told me how proud he was to see his Dad go off to work early in the morning from West Kilburn - always smartly dressed in a suit, ironing his own button down collared white shirt before leaving. As a kid, Dad told me that he liked to grab "a penny worth of stale" (day old sticky buns, pastries) and claimed that's why he lost his teeth at such a young age - he was terrified of the dentist, but always made sure I went for regular check-ups and at almost age 60, I still have all of my teeth.
I remember being at a League Cup replay at The Valley in late 1975, Charlton were 2nd Division then but had been the better side at Loftus Road and we were lucky to get a replay. Like you, I couldn't believe the size of their ground, it was the biggest in the country at that time and there were over 30,000 for the Tuesday night match. We were up at the top of one of the huge terraces and I had a great view of Dave Thomas scoring a superb goal to put us 2 up, he got the ball just inside our half and away he went, teasing his marker one way then cutting inside and from fully 35 yards hit the sweetest shot you'll ever see, I was in a direct line behind him and the ball went like an arrow right up into the top far corner of the net. We went on to win 3-0 before our only home defeat that season in the next round, 1-3 to Newcastle who put us out of the FA Cup as well...
My Dad often used to say "after the Lord Mayor's show................came the downpour". Let's hope we score one of those long distance power drivers on Sat. In the period 1970 - 1975, most of the results at games we travelled up to London to watch together at Loftus Road always seemed to have a hard luck story ending - narrow losses, opposition getting a late equalizer etc, we always had such high hopes for a great result. I remember one big FA Cup game in that era that we lost - could have been Man Utd or Man City, and then the long disappointing drive back to Hampshire. I guess without that, it just wouldn't be Queens Park Rangers!
Exactly Kilburn. The many days of pain make the few glory days all the more enjoyable when they do happen.
I was at The Valley in our promotion season 83 when we won 3-0 (?) and Micklewhite scored with a bycicle kick a la Trevor Sinclair.....they had at that time the brilliant Dane Alan Simmonsen playing for them, he was head and shoulders above any other of their players even though he was getting past his best....... We stood on the huge terace that ran along the side of the pitch although if I remember correctly the top half of the terrace was cordoned off as being unsafe.
Was that a night game? I remember going there in the early 80's for a night game when Simmonsen played for them. Can't remember the score, but remember that huge side terrace. I also recall going there around the same period for a Saturday game and John Burridge pulled off one of the best saves I've ever seen.
I too was there, it sure was some ground, and Simmonsen was some player! Ex European footballer of the year, after scoring the winner for Barcelona in the European Cup Winners Cup Final he left to sign for 2nd division Charlton! Go figure
He was a brilliant footballer, how he ever ended up at Charlton God only knows because he was at that stage in his career still far too good for them..... Just remembered a horror game at LR in the early 70's, they put 4 past us and it pi55ed with rain the whole game....that was deeply unpleasant!!!!
28th Nov 1970 QPR 1-4 Charlton The pitch cut up as usual after it poured down. It was their first win at Rangers for 36 years; their first away win in 36 games and it took them off the bottom of the 2nd division. Plus they had Derek Bellotti, discarded by Rangers 6 years before, played out of his skin in goal for them
