Hope they catch the feckers although it is unlikely. I don't live that far from Gary and my place got burgled on Black Friday a few years back so I know how it feels. They didn't ransack my place as they have done at monks place but they did steal all the jewellery in the house including some sentimental pieces and my collection of blueray discs.

Sorry to hear that Pagan, and about Gary. We had an attempted burglary here a while back while we slept. Luckily we have an alarm system which provides some peace of mind, at least. I can't imagine how devastating that must be. Your home should be sanctuary from the evils of the world, such a violation. I'd literally chop their hands off.

I bet most of the stuff is in Blaenymaes now! These scum just sell the stuff to feed their drugs habit, the BBC article doesn't say if he had an alarm system, I would have thought he did, but judging by the account maybe not. I have always invested in an alarm system, if anyone tried my home, my mobile and three other phone numbers are automatically phoned within seconds! I hope they catch the scum....................<ok>

Probably a drug funding exercise. Sadly all too common. :(

I was burgled, twice,in The Gambia,so I can empathise with The Monk family.
It's a truly sickening experience to come home and find your front door open, and your home having been ransacked.
Even worse being the reaction of the local police, who were totally indifferent,
The thieves clearly lacked class, however, since my Sinatra L.P.'s were unmolested.
    Africa,eh,the land of miracles!!!

My place in Spain was "done" whilst I was back in Wales - on two separate occasions! They took all the usual gadgets, Hi-Fi, TV, DVD etc and my computer. That was the worst thing because all my work was on it. Back up? The ****s found my external hard drive as well!

Couldn't get insurance as they had demanded burglar bars on every window and a full alarm system and my landlord refused to install them. Far too pricey for me to install on a temporary place. I replaced the gadgets but losing my work was a hammer blow. It took me years to redo it all. Literally.

Luckily for them, and me I suppose, that I wasn't at home at the time because I used to keep a baseball bat (been advised to get one) which I would have used with a great deal of energy... and pleasure. Spanish jails are not nice places, so just as well I was away.

I hate thieves with a passion. For me, housebreaking should carry a mandatory 10 years with no remission. That should deter a lot of casual crime leaving the police to concentrate on the dedicated criminals.

Ivor your situation is the reason that I have all my personal documents on my mobile galaxy note as well as on tablet, not only that but decades of family and friends photo albums too, so if my house did get turned over, I have a backup always with me encrypted, it did mean I had to purchase 64GB cards, but the peace of mind of not losing such valuable personal data was worth it. I also remove all hard drives from laptops and PC's that are being left in the home while away on holidays etc, it's not difficult just one screw on the underside of the Laptops, and away to go!...............<cheers>

I try to cover every eventuality!...............<laugh>

There's definitely a need for a certain level of paranoia where backups are concerned, as seen with Ivor's unfortunate loss. I tell family to at least back up their photos on a stick but most aren't too bothered. Until they lose them of course.

I also remove my drives when away. Plus I have backups online and on external HDs. I may be too paranoid!

i was burgled when i had my first studio down in Stockwell 20 odd years ago, bastards stole all my cameras and kicked in my darkroom. they really turned the place over, more out of frustration at the slim pickings than anything else i suspect. set me back years, but i think must be worse when it's your own home that gets violated, hope Gary gets to have a quite word with them.
Funnily enough i've never heard of anyone being burgled here in HK, and we have a seriously skewed society with the government recently admitting that 20% of our population now live below their set poverty line. i guess the thieving bastards here tend to be the ones working for the financial institutions, and the violated are those reduced to living in sub-divided rooms or metal cages, of which there are thousands.

we should parade the burglars around the streets so we know who`s who>>>>>>>>>>a recent rise in the Aberdare area has got people talking and the pictures of the suspects were plastered all over face book>>>>I think the boys have been caught by locals before the police could protect them.

listen 2 this fkr>>>>someone tried nicking my car for a lift home>>>what they didn't realise it who they were dealing with>>>im tight and didn't have petrol or even a battery that worked>>>>so they left it just around the corner from where I parked it>>>>>>>>>>anyway nowt off the police apart from the obvious crap they spew out>>>>anyway 9months later this fella admitted trying 2 take my car whilst in jail>>>>how do I know this the old bill rang me 2 let me know>>they also told me he had taken 3months of his term by admitting 2 the crime>>>>>>>work that fkr out.......cheers for that I thought now fking get off my phone line **** face I told him........

I had experience of working in criminal justice for 25 years and I can tell you categorically that the vast majority of burglaries and thefts are to fund a drug habit. The 'War on Drugs' is well and truly lost, and probably was lost before it began. Whilst most of the public would disagree my experience tells me that the only way to deal with it is to decriminalise but regulate hard drug use and fully decriminalise cannabis use. Yes, it's harmful but so is alcohol (with more social fallout) and even coffee has side effects.

Register the hard drug users and help them kick it. The cost would be tiny compared to the cost to society of the carnage they cause to get money. You'd make instant paupers out of the producers across the world if every country followed suit and the local dealers would be out of business in no time.

Controversial? Oh yes. Would it work? Who knows but it's better than locking up the users whilst the millionaires get off scott free. The Portuguese have done it on a limited basis and have had some success.

Totally agree, KJ. Legalise it and control it is the way to go. As you say, the producers and big distributors would take a huge hit and crime rates would be bound to decrease drastically. This would free up police resources to concentrate on mopping up the whole sick business.

The war on drugs has been an abject failure. i like the idea of decriminalisation, hitting the producers and dealers where it hurts. but there would need to be commitment from government and society to educate and support users that there are better alternatives in life - i'm not sure that this possible. unfortunately we can't alter the fact that the experience of being on drugs initially is pretty exhilarating, people wouldn't continue to take them if it wasn't.
as my kids start to get older i realise that the time will come soon when they will be exposed to them and in probability take them - drugs are everywhere. so if and when they do i hope it's clean and their have the sense not to make it a habit

ok im user, but im a strong believer that cannabis is safer than some already available drugs on the market legally.........trouble is there`s a bigger picture>>>how can they justify lying about a super herb with propaganda and then 90percent of the population realise how many different things this plant can do>>>>>>>>>>look into the business that would go under if cannabis was used 2 its full abilities>>>>clothing, oil, medicine, logging 2 name just a few of the greedy monopoly families that would suffer.
