excellent read...Really pertinent in terms of the international against Germany. The goal was a blinding example of the basics going wrong.Zonal or not zonal doesnt matter in the end...or the other maxim "everybody`s zonal outside the box!" . It doesnt matter inside the box the arguments over or youre enabling the defender to have a ready made excuse if a goal is scored and the system can be analysed The other thing that tickles me these days is the bad movement at set pieces Too many are dull affairs or lucky deflections OK you get some " canny " moves sometimes like the kid who ran round the back to equalise in the derby I think he surprised himself (Ibet that wasnt "in the plan") ...but the number of times I see "set" plays where lamp posts get their money for standing jumps makes my heart sink I think of chess games and the type of stuff that the pro game provides Unfortunately youre going to get the type of stuff the article shows detailed in the changing room The overcoached game now has a slick side which is a million miles from set plays I remember in the past
They say you cant compare the past with todays football but at set plays you get closer. Anybody remembering a corner in the Fulwell end will tell you how great it was...For a start a deafening chant of "Charlie...Charlie...Charlie!..."....no standing jump for Hurley He`d start his run from the exact corner of the box and finish it usually with two fullbacks hanging off his shoulders and the ball in the net or devastation behind him....
Germany would have probably employed zonal marking if Andy Carroll had played...they would have had a more uncomfortable night however Im sure.....and England wouldnt have been so preoccupied with new wave Iberian possession football ....And guess what he just might have made the difference by scoring one goal....with his head....because he is outstanding in the air...and he`s big
