I disagree - I took it as a joke and I'm sure the majority did also. Why does it have to be racist when you put a lookalike picture on the internet? Skin colour is irrelevant so it is the ones who highlight it are actually being racist as they are the ones that 'see' a problem with it. If he had put a pic of Obertan and a Nik-Nak would that be ok?

This is ******ed. They are friends, and it's obviously banter. If the dude is black/afro, he is. There is nothing to change it, he was born like that. As long as he doesn't mean it in a harmful way, what problem is there? Also not forgetting that it was Haidara who teased first ,wasn't it? In a harmless joking manner no less.

This is why publishing to the world is a bad idea.

There are all sorts of things I will say to a friend which I would never say to a person I had just met. My friend knows me and I know him. We have built up a shared st of references and have a set of running jokes. Whatever I say will be understood in the context of our ongoing relationship. Often its humour comes from being something that would generally be offensive but which isn't in the context.

Take that phrase out of the context and it may really be offensive. Referring to an Irish person as a dumb mick or making IRA references would really be offensive - - except that is part of an ongoing exchange which includes references to both English colonial exploitation and to their inability to ever really enjoy themselves. Are the things I say offensive ? Depends - - if said ot the world in general, yes absolutely. If said to my friend in particular, no.

The trouble with social media is that it takes your comment to your friend and turns it into a publication to the world.

Think we all do. The guys were just having a laugh among themselves. Just a pity that the wrong people got hold of it.

    <yikes> Racist!

Here's the tweet, by the way.

Leaving aside the racist nature, as you guys don't seem to think it's racist, it comes down to what's appropriate to communicate to tens of thousands of followers. Like it or lump it, he's not just communicating with his mates so the "banter" argument doesn't really work. Anyone with a modicum of sense can see that people can easily take offence to what's being posted, if he knows that his teammates won't take offence then great, text the joke, use Whatsapp or get a private account on Twitter because there's a big difference between what's appropriate in private and in public.

The Tweet doesn't make him racist, it just makes him thick, like all footballers and the sooner they all stop using Twitter to make stupid statements that they then have to apologise for the better.

The argument of banter is made because Haidara came out and said it was banter between team mates.
I agree about players leaving twitter because it just leaves them open to scrutiny.
Taylor wasn't the first and he wont be the last get into hot water through twitter.
