Does anyone know what the bid is costing and what the expected benefits are of winning it? When Liverpool were the European winners all I remember is a few jokes on the TV when it was announced, and then again at the start of the year. Then this year, if I wasn't writing it here how many people would know without googling it that it was Derry in Londonderry? Is it just other cities being crap at promoting the fact they've won it, or is there some other benefit beyond public awareness?
Difficult to quantify in real terms. The Humber st lot will buff up their CVs if we win. Let's not forget the hostile, negative, scornful, cynical and phillistine response of many local turds when it was first announced that we were going in for it. The HDM even ran a poll on it where a majority were against it and ridiculed the juxtaposition of our city with the word 'culture'. Most of these are local Top 4 fans, who insist on living here but will NOT buy into Hull in any shape or form, the ones who say 'It's a dump, I can't wait to leave" but never actually do. Let's hope that the horizons of the average Hullensian have been broadened, and a collective self-belief is instilled just by entering this competition. And if we win? Well, a banishing of apathy, self-pity, cultural inferiority complex whilst retaining the traditional bullshit detectors and feet -on -the -ground clarity of vision.
I was working in Liverpool when they where European city of culture.. Millions was invested throughout the city the waterfront was transformed and the place was buzzing. I don't know any figures on how beneficial it would be Financially but given the choice between been known as Britain's crappest town or UK City of Culture it can only be a positive.
The European City Of Culture is on a different level altogether as it is an official EU thing and because of that brings in a lot more funding and other benefits than the one we are in for. Derry isn't in Londonderry. They are both the same place.
If you don't know this or the reasons for it I wouldn't admit it. Have you been asleep for the past couple of decades?
It may have been more amusing to have posted it on the Celtic board. As far as City of Culture goes, as officially the City and County are Londonderry, but there's a local authority of Derry I was guessing there may be a difference in the boundaries, and took it that the Derry authority was the one responsible for the bid and that it's catchment was smaller than the county of Londonderry.
Lets hope we don't win, we hate winning and success, plus if they started trying to do up areas, they'd be destroying the history of the City too, bastards. No to change!
'Derry/Londonderry' is what will be written on broadcasters scripts but it sounds like 'Derry, Londonderry' when pronounced so it's easy to understand the confusion.
Did a job there a few years back and when we referred to it as Londonderry was told by the locals to call it Derry or else. The ''or else'' was never explained!!!
Derry or Londonderry depends on whether you are catholic or protestant. If we get it then things like the Turner Prize will be staged in the city, and on BBC Breakfast some women was saying how many extra tourists there had been. And hopefully those tourists will see the city isn't as depicted by that awful Kirstie Allsopp (posh totty who only believes that the south and upper class people count)
I thought so but i'm confused why the offical UK City of Culture site says 'Derry ~ Londonderry' as the title holder.
To the Southern Irish it is Derry, as they no not want any affiliation with the word London mentioned. To the North it is Londonderry.
i have good friends in liverpool and visit there quite a bit We do need it It has transformed areas of Liverpool which was a bit of a dump. The point is if we use it for the good of the city and with our city fathers lies the problem WE REALLY DO NEED IT
