Oh and in answer to the original question the only noteable people I have played against were snooker players, I played against Alex Higgins the same year he won his first World Championship, he did an exhibition at Chalk Lane club. He played all the members of the Chalk Lane A & B teams and beat us all drinking on average a pint of larger at each frame, there were 12 of us, I simply broke off and Alex did the rest. At the same club another world champion this time John Spencer totally different to Alex but quite a funny man except on the table then he was serious, Alex was outragous, some of his shots were unbelieveable and became even more so with each pint of larger. With John he would deliberately put his opponent in a snooker even when a pot was possible, good entertainment both of them, and yes I got well beaten.
I stood next to Ron Shiner on the bus and he got off on Anlaby road outside Stan Lehmans hairdressers.
On holiday in the South of France, some young local (17-18) was having\had trials at Arsenal and said the coaching staff would kill him if they found out he was playing with us lot of a bit of waste land Cant remember his name and don't think he ever did make it lol. So I guess he doesn't really count...
This probably doesn't count, but on several of my many trips back home to Hessle, I had a few beers with Waggy in his pub on the Weir ! I must have bought half a dozen signed copies of his autobiography after those sessions. He invited me down to meet & get autographs of many of the old City players attending the final game at B.P. Waggy even put his marker on a signed copy of Tom Courtneys autobiography for me. I think I've loaded 'em up onto the Tigers History thread on here. Gave the Waggy books to Hull City fans in Toronto for Christmas presents.
I played sunday league on the wing ,i could shift and was all left foot but could play a bit Then i had a hour and half being marked by Frank Harrison I never touched the bloody ball an he was twice my age then Taught me how good these players were
I've played against Leigh Palin a couple of times, he can't run, but once he has the ball it's impossible to get it off him.
I trained everyday with Ian Botham when at Scunthorpe. Played against many Good pro's in fact played at Sunderland reserves when Bob stokoe was their in front of 14000 many years ago i marked Ally Brown and also got booked for a challenge on Barry Venison. Another game we beat Hull city reserves hard man Micky Horswill was captain for City. Also in running i ran at Crystal Palace and came second to world junior 800 mts champion Peter Elliot. Overall i played against lots of well known professionals many years ago but many on here will be to young to remember. i had to pack Football in because of injury when i was eighteen
Played against Eddie Gray, Peter Lorrimer, Jimmy Greenhoff, Paul Madely, Alan Birchenell, Mick Jones, Alan Woodward and a few others in the early sixties in the northern intermediate league, for City juniors.
A colleague of mine from a few years ago played professionally in the late 80s/early 90s (for Notts County, Bradford, Exeter City - he liked reminding me of the goal he scored at Boothferry Park in Exeter's 2-1 win there in October '91). But I scored two goals past him in one five-a-side match.
Not played against any City lads, but my mate nearly get beaten up by Deano and Ash tried to intervene.
Graham Roberts - Tottenham Full Back, our school used to participate in a scheme that sent kids down to train with London clubs for a weekend. I got Tottenham both times. Tiger64 - My Dad used to run Hull Schools Football and had Pat Heard, Noel Parkinson, Geoff Hunter etc in his team....... sounds at around the same time.
My brother played against Jack Barmby when he use to play for Westella, not particularly sure he enjoyed that battering
Yeah, he still does the odd bit every now and again. Gareth Roberts' daughter was best friends with my sister, so have grown up with them. Didn't realise he was a footballer!
Played against some ex-city in about 86 in an Eat Riding Cup game. We were **** hot that year, won the league unbeaten conceding about 12 goals, won the two other cups we entered yet got battered by these 6 nowt. 5 or 6 ex city playing with 5 or 6 young lads. Also played against Neil Buckley around 93-94 in The Hull Sunday League, think he may of been playing for Northern Foods they battered us too.
Former Mansfield goalkeeper and Hull City goalkeeping coach Rod Arnold does the pub quizzes at the Fox and Coney, he's alright. Still has the alltime appearance record for Mansfield. Former Tigers youth player Joe Lamplough (who went on to play professionally in Iceland) plays for a team in my Monday night football league. Sylvain Cloutier also plays in the same team, with another GB hockey player. Think it's Hull Stingrays side. As a wee lad, I once put a penalty past Roy Carroll. I played pool in Soar Point (a Scream Pub in Leicester) with Barry Hayles. Caned him.
When I was 5 or 6 years old, I had my tonsils out in HRI, John Kayes son ( I think ) was in the bed opposite me, I remember him visiting and everyone been really excited. He did come over to say hello, which my old man thought was great.
