It really makes my pee boil, my teeth grind and generally makes me want to nail the goolies to a rabid badger of anyone that thinks it is appropriate to clap during the two minute silence. Stop it, it is disrespectful , insulting, and shows a complete lack of class. It might be alrite for the foreigners and the northerners who have no respect, but a few cafc plums tried it yesterday and I would happily cut off their hands if they did it next year.
I would happily join you in this. Made my blood boil - we were not remembering john doe a footballler who had passed away through an excess of something after retirement but men and women who put their neck on the line for a greater good. Our silence should be a time to remind ourselves of what they gave which was a damn sight more than 90 minutes.
The clue is in the name...... it's a 'two minutes silence'...... not a difficult concept to understand is it?
I made the point earlier on the CL board[wash my mouth out] that it was not appropriate to clap on remembrance day but no response.Having just finished watching the man utd v arsenal ground where 76000 observed the silence impecably. Yesterday the silence started for about 15 seconds then a few hundred leeds fans started applauding, not in a raucous disrespectful way ,but due I suspect to a lack of insight into the difference between a round of applause for a fine local or national sportsman and a respectful silence for the millions of men and women who have given their lives in wars. With regard to Tewks comment about "putting them in their place" no this didnt happen as it would have made things worse.Eventually the silent majority silenced the clappers by being silent but it left a bad taste. That bad taste resurfaced for me when i heard the silence at old trafford and the contrast was stark. Thanks to typical for raising this subject. I think it may need announcers in future to emphasise that in this instance silence should mean silence.
I find it rather depressing that 11th November is not a public holiday. I find it the most important british day in our recent history but we do very little to honour it and we do that badly. Even the yanks have a Veterans Day as a public holiday.
"All quite on the western front "should be compulsory reading for everyone who may not have a clue about what went on in the trenches.
I can't believe you guys are so wound up about remembering people who died for our right to free expression yet you deny one Jonathon Ackworth his right to post his opinion on this forum. You should be ashamed of yourselves.
Totally agree with all that has been said here. Almost made me want to scream on Saturday "why are you f------g clapping , you morons?" It's all part of the Great Campaign to dumb this once great country down still further. Next you will have Simon Cowell replacing the Prime Minister at the Cenotaph, and Sharon Osbourne stepping in for the Queen. On a serious note, I blame two factors for the complete trashing of the cultures of this country. 1. The Blair Government 1997-2007 2. EU accession.
This FREE THE ACWORTH ONE. You're no better than the Nazis for banning him, yet you all sit and whine here about people applauding during a minutes silence for those very soldiers who died fighting for the right to free expression and liberty
It's a minutes silence - you know, to reflect on all the brave soilders who gave up their lives for the people back home. It would be considered rude to stand in silence during a minutes applause with arms folded, and it's rude to applaud at a time when we're asked to be quiet out of respect for the fallen soilders. But again, another poster who hasn't grasped the point of the thread.....
Barca played classical music during theirs - wasn't disrespectful at all. You're no better than Hitler imo.
Well at Celtic we applause because we're unable to trust our own fans now to express freedom of opinion, and it generally has worked out great. For the past year. UP THE RA.
Ah! I thought at Parkhead they enjoyed the jazz musician Sun Ra. I don't know, maybe they are related.
