Press conference this morning...land off the Avon Ring Road near UWE, apparently. The Mem will be developed by Sainsburys. Has a familiar ring to it...let's hope that the residents of Horfield want a Sainsburys more than a football stadium, and the residents of Stoke Park don't mind a football stadium nearby.

This sounds more feasible than sme other suggestions, and would mean we don't have to put up with a building site before moving to a new ground.

Must be South Glos council rather than Bristol City council, so don't know wheter this will make a difference. If they're smart they'll put in a few things which benefit the local community and the university.

This is fantastic news for the Gas.

20K all seater stadium, great transport network (2 train stations, good bus links, easy access to M32/M4/M5), no "down time" while it's being built.

I'm not going to argue with you and I think it's to early to predict how well either team will perform this year. Yes I'm optomistic about Swindon returning to League 1 at the first time of asking just as your optomistic about Rover's chances. Naturally I feel both teams should do well after relegation last year but it's hard to predict.

My initial post was a joke and a bit of banter but I appologise if you took it seriously :)

Wish you good luck this season and look forward to playing you once again.

Believe it when I see it, sit in it, touch it, feel it oooooerrrrr missus...... Too many false dawns have made me rather warey of Bristol Rovers big announcements......Call me cynical but the timing is fantastic when season ticket sales are low........Perhaps the PR machine has at last latched onto the fact that good news might boost sales......Visit the BBC Sport League One??? website and suddenly we have 4 articles in their!!!

Being a old narrow minded c**t I`d prefer to stay at a redeveloped Mem but that`s mainly because I like the ample choice of public houses on Glos Rd. :)

I'm uneasy about this news. On the one hand it's fantastic news for the club. As others have said the site is great for access and the link with UWE is admirable. Also good news for Bristol Rugby. Like YOBG I like the Mem. but accept that its days are numbered.
But another Sainsbury's!! Within distance there are 2 Tescos, a Lidl and a Sainsbury's on the edge of Bradley Stoke. They've persuaded everyone that they needed to move a few hundred yards down the Winterstoke Road, and they've ousted the stallholders from Clifton Arcade on Blackboy Hill.
And what about the history of the ground and the highly symbolic gates? Also the Mem is surrounded by housing on all four sides..I feel for those residents.
So I'm not as overjoyed as I should, and want to, be!!

the gates are grade 1 listed, and are to remain in place with the new development of a supermarket.

Captain Jack just reading the Horfield ROSE blog cannot see anywhere where they suggest they want or support the sainsbury's suggestion I would very much doubt they'll be jumping for joy at the announcement of any develoment on the Mem site..........

I can't see that a Sainsbury's at the top of the Gloucester Road is going to affect the shops any more than they already have been - there's already a couple of Sainsburys Locals down there. I would have thought the Horfield residents would be delighted to have a decent sized Sainsburys on their doorstep, and it's a useful stop off for passing traffic on the way home from work.

Whoever put the proposal together deserves a pat on the back, because this looks like a flyer.

We'll get a new ground, tucked out of the way but close to road, rail and even a few cycle tracks. The scheme will put something back into the community, and it's flexible enough to extend the ground if we suddenly pull in crowds of over 20K on a regular basis.
