Hi people - i'm new by the way following the closure of 606 Just been reading the article in 'the mirror' newspaper - im sure its all paper talk/nonsense/garbage etc but how the hell could Pompey be bidding £1 million for a player?! (Jason Shackell in this instance) I'd love to see Greg Halford back down here but if Wolves want more than £500k for him i'd be highly suprised if we would take them up on that! (although i think he could be worth more than that) Is it just me?!
Welcome to not606 Webbo! The answer to your question is that we were taken over by the Russians on 1st June. We are still in a CVA agreement and everything still has to be ratified by the football league - but as long as the wages stay in the CVA outline, it doesnt matter how much we pay for a player. We could pay out £40m for a player but as long as his wages fit into the long term plans then its not a issue. Obvisouly we wont be bidding £40m for a player, but in this day and age - £1m for a championship player is a reasonable price. Lets just see what the owners have in store for us next week when they address the press and SC.
Im aware that we were bought out by the Russians! but even then, we're trying to get some stability! Im also aware that £1mil is a small sum of money in terms of transfer fee - even for a championship player! The point of my thread was that, i wouldnt be suprised if SC was set about a £1-2 mil transfer kitty for the summer - i know this isnt too much in comparison to most clubs but this is Pompey we're talking about here! to blow a whole million quid on 1 decent champ player with a small budget would be ridiculous like you say, i guess we should see what the new owners come out with in the press next week! perhaps we can afford to spend millions on players again with these Russians
You hit the nail on the head - lets see what the Russians have in store. They could give SC a transfer kitty of £20m for all we know - as long as the long term wage structure fits in with the CVA then no-one will care!
People will justifiably criticise us of profigacy and a total lack of regard to those who have to wait another 4 years before they get just 20% of their money back. Until the CVA is cleared then I see little being spent on players, however much we or our owners may wish it.
