A lot of the fans had rubber horse head masks on at the game.

Assaulting the police always does look worse than it is though.

It's incredibly harsh to put him in prison for this, it's simply a high profile case and he's been made an example of.

He could probably appeal but it will fall on deaf ears - unjust? indeed it is - they had to set an example that if you attack a Police horse you will go to prison.

What he did was very wrong but jail is too harsh.
I'm waiting to see what the two chaps who threw a flare at the linesman get.

Just a bit of clarification if that's OK.

He wasn't charged with 'hitting a police horse', he was charged & convicted with violent disorder as were half a dozen others on the same day, who were also jailed. He only took the headlines because he was at the forefront of the riot and punched a horse, which tend to be eye-catching.

I was sat next to a an off duty Morpeth copper, yesterday, who says he's a 'known idiot' with form, although not for clouting horses. So it's not his first offence but it is his first spell of custody.

Its often viewed differently where you actually assault the police. Just the way it is. The law is inconsistent, that's just the way it is. I don't think the Sunderland fans who attacked police dogs got prison sentences did they? Its hard to have masses of sympathy with him but he has undoubtedly been made an example of. Unfortunately for him there are concerns that football violence is on the rise again, this was a high profile example and he has paid the price.

There were 6 others jailed, on Friday, so that isn't really the case .... it was a sustained period of violent disorder by a mob confronting the police.
Plus the bloke has other convictions for which he wasn't given custody, obviously hasn't learned his lesson.
