Don't get me wrong, at the time my blood would be boiling and no doubt I'd be shouting obscenities along with everyone else. I'd be furious. But once that subsides, you can't blame your entire season on a single refs decision, even if that's what it comes down to after 37 games. We should have used the previous 37 games to make sure we were mathematically safe before that last game. As I said, it's no different to blaming refs for any other type of wrong decision. According to debatable decisions we were robbed of 5 points in 11/12 through refs calls, so we need to be aiming for safety at 45 points not 40 points to compensate. It's a part of the game and we need to deal with it.
Canary call on twitter has just posted this and it really made me laugh! REF YOU FUTTUN BOTTLED THAT DESISHUN. FER PASSED MARSHALL TH' BALL AND HE BLUMMUN MISSED IT. LEGITAMUTTT GHOUL. FUTTUN MUPPUTT
Like I said, its one way of looking at it. and I am not convinced, as a football fan, that you would take it so well to be honest. I would be totally effin raging for year to come Even if it was another team that suffered through such an incident, I would be hugely sympathetic, even them feckers down the road
I completely agree with this. Just to turn it on its head what would Malky McKay be thinking if that goal had stood and his team were relegated as a result! It sounded like you created enough chances to win several football matches so the game should have been won long before then!
Lol dave. Nice post. The ref will undoubtedly get pelters. But sportsmanship should take precedence over gamesmanship and a win at all costs mentality.
The really annoying thing is, that decision shouldn't have mattered, we should have been way out of sight by then!
Depends which viewpoint you want to take JW. You can either play by the 'written rules', or you can play by the 'unwritten rules'. So far, only Guru has had the balls to say how he would feel under the scenario I illustrated (thanks Guru <ok) (Maybe DH, if that is how he really feels - still can't believe it mind). By the letter of the FA rules, and you should knows this, as you are supposed to be a ref, the goal should have been awarded - yes? Don't take it to the next stage of letting in an equaliser - that goals should have stood, by the letter of law - yes or no?
Yes of course it should have stood if you are going strictly by the laws of the game BUT the great thing about our country is that we still like to see FAIR PLAY and the game played in a Sporting way! I would have allowed the goal to stand as it didn't break any of the laws of the game! I do not agree with players kicking the ball out of play for injuries to an opponent as it should always be at the discretion of the Ref to stop play BUT having said that you can not ignore the fact that it is a Sporting gesture and it is an unwritten convention that possession is always given back to the opponent. In this case a goal was scored when the opposing team was not expecting it from the restart so even though the law wasnt broken Fair Play was not deemed to have taken place! Im going for a lay down now... Im exhausted!
But the ref also has a duty to uphold the spirit of the game, which he has done. Unfortunately the cash cow that is the premier league can be seen as a cancer in the game all too clearly tonight.
I wonder how long it will be, given the huge financial implications, when a result like yours today is subject to a legal challenge in court! If we are not careful this could really happen in the future! The stakes are sooooo high nowadays!
I am pretty sure it will happen eventually, perhaps if Man Utd slip that far down the ladder Did Sheff Utd go to court with West Ham, or was that fobbed off in some way?
What the tevez saga JWM. Everybody talks about how the refs job is, sometimes players could help them a hell of a lot. Just out of interest as i haven't seen it, what was the reaction of the players when it happened, did they celebrate or what?
