Brucey's thoughts on Sunday...
Just trying to remember if the testimonial friendly I saw us play v Spurs was for Garreth Roberts at Boothferry, think it was- everybody was excited because there was a rumour Gazza was going to play, he didn't. Barmby scored for them, he was about 12 at the time.
Hull were also beaten by Spurs in the 1980-81 FA Cup 4th Round 2-0 at White Hart Lane with Steve Archibald and Garry Brooke getting the goals. Remember this game really well as it was our biggest game for several years. We were in the 3rd or 4th division, as was, and were obviously expected to lose, but in fact we played really well and only conceded in the last quarter of the game. It was, at the time, the biggest game I'd ever attended (was used to 5000 at Fer Ark or 900 at Lincoln one time!), and was a real eye opener. We were pelted with coins throughout the game, locked into a pen with no exits.
1) It's City not Hull. 2) We finished last in division 3 that season, despite having Tony Norman in goal, Sir Keith Edwards up front, Gordon Nisbet in defence, Paul Haigh (England U21), Garreth Roberts, Steve McLaren, Brian Marwood, Billy Whitehurst and Les Mutrie, all managed by Mike Smith the highly rated ex Wales Manager. All of those players were easily Division Two standard. 3) We held out until the 82nd minute I believe despite hardly crossing the halfway line against Hoddle, Villa, Ardiles, Archibald etc. I was convinced Keithy was going to score a breakaway winner until then but it was not to be. Spurs were rebuilding their ground and to our left a big building site where the main stand used to be. 4) We took a special train down there cost £20 (a fortune at the time for those of us on the sharp end of Labour's mismanagement of our economy in the late 70s). The route to and from the station (Northumberland Park?) went through a ****hole estate (Broadwater Farm?) whose locals were full of attitude behind the police lines. The Yyddz were a top firm at the time, the Shelf was packed and sporadic scrapping broke out in it. If it wasn't a total sell out it was as near as damn it at 37,000, we got half the Park Lane end which was split down the middle, our bit being dangerously full. Proper, proper football.
It's 'ull not Hull. I'd forgotten the building work, but you're right about the dangerously full. Bloody lethal with coins raining down and nowhere to move to.
Tottenham are the only non-league club to have won the FA Cup and were founded in 1882 one year before my club Darlington. Darlington after massive administration problems were demoted to the 9th tier of English football for the 2012/13 season. A long climb back but promoted last season and up near the top of the league this season.
Ahead of Sunday's PL game v Hull City... Spurs have played 14 games this season. Won 11. Drawn 1. Lost 2. Scored 27 goals. Conceded 5. Kept 11 clean sheets. Equaled our best start to a Premier League season. Are two points better off than in the identical fixtures last season.
Stats from BBC website Head-to-head Hull have only won one once at White Hart Lane - 1-0 in October 2008. They drew 0-0 on their only other visit to Spurs in the top flight the following season. They have only met on 24 previous occasions. Tottenham have won 10 times, Hull six and there have been eight draws. Tottenham All eight of Tottenham's Premier League goals this season have either been assisted or scored by a summer signing. Spurs have kept the most clean sheets in the top flight this campaign (five), along with Southampton. They have not won their last two Premier League home games - they haven't gone three home league games without a win since May 2011. Sixteen points equals their best start to a Premier League season after eight matches. Hull City Including this fixture, all of Hull's away games this season have been against teams in the top 10 of the league going into this weekend's matches (Chelsea, Man City, Newcastle, Everton and Tottenham). The Tigers have collected just one win from their last 28 Premier League matches away from home (D7, L20). Only the bottom three and Stoke City have scored fewer than Hull's seven goals this season. Hull have used fewer players than any other Premier League side this season (17).
