v Sunday 27th October 2013 3pm Kick Off Referee: Stephen Martin Football for a Fiver returns to the Valley this weekend with the visit of FA Cup Champions Wigan Athletic, these promotion matches have had up and down results for the Addicks since their introduction including a 1-0 defeat at home to Barnsley last season. Because of those Europa League commitments (a 1-1 draw with Russian side Rubin Kazan on Thursday night) means that the Valley will host Sunday football for the first time in a number of years, other than when matches have been re-arranged for the last weekend of a season. The Opposition Relegated from the Premier League last season Wigan have had an indifferent start to the season resulting in them sitting mid-table although their Europa League commitments have no doubt played a bit part in their league form. After the departure of Roberto Martinez to Everton in the summer, Dave Whelan has turned to Owen Coyle to try and get Wigan to bounce back to the Premier League at the first time of asking. Key Men Wigan have been lucky since their relegation since they've only seen a handful of players depart (including McCarthy, Kone and Alcaraz to Everton) - The team has no doubt been strengthened by experienced striker Grant Holt from Norwich City, ex-Charlton Player of the Year Scott Carson and the highly rated Nick Powell brought in from Manchester United on a loan deal (someone whom Chris Powell admitted that we tried to sign) Previous Meetings 31.03.2007 - Charlton Athletic 1-0 Wigan Athletic (D.Bent) 11.11.2006 - Wigan Athletic 3-2 Charlton Athletic (McCulloch, Camara, Jackson; De Zeeuw (OG), M.Bent) 17.12.2005 - Wigan Athletic 3-0 Charlton Athletic (Camara) 20.08.2005 - Charlton Athletic 1-0 Wigan Athletic (D.Bent) Charlton Team News After victory last time out against Blackburn Rovers, Chris Powell may be loath to tinker with the side that performed so well, with Chris Solly and Leon Cort still out for a few more weeks possibly months, there are no new injury worries for the Addicks. Likely Team to Face Wigan Athletic Hamer Wilson - Morrison - Wood - Wiggins Pritchard - Cousins - Stephens Stewart Church - Kermorgant Substitutes Bench Alnwick - Evina - Dervite - Jackson - Gower - Green - Sordell A4L's Prediction: 1-0 (Kermorgant)
Great stuff Let's hope we can keep the feelgood factor from the Blackburn win going. Kermorgant back would be a huge boost, and if he does start I can see us winning this one 2-0.
Cheers a4L Looking forward to the game, but object to the Stalinist nature of the compulsory charity donation
Cheers a4L Agree 100% with your team, Kermorgant for Sordell the only change if the big french man is fully fit. 3-1 Charlton for me, Church, Yann & Stewart
Kermit has to come in for Sordell. We want to win the game don't we? I'd bring Harriott back for Stewart. Nothing to choose between them really, but for my money Harriott has more potential, and I'd like to keep him in touch with the first team, so maybe a bit of rotation in this position.
Good thread, A4L. Wigan, by all accounts, played well last night, but they're inconsistent in the Championship and we should be looking to beat them. I say 2-1 to the Addicks. Kermit with both.
Tough one - I still think on paper they have the strongest 11 in the league (after QPR). Playing in Europe will have been a distraction, no doubt about it, but they are fortunate enough to be able to rotate a few players. I'm going to be slightly conservative and say this will be a 1-1 draw. Stephens grabbing the equaliser.
Voe, do you deliberately try being controversial with your posts, Stalinist to charge £6 for a championship match, I think not. If you don't like it you can go pay £30 or whatever Millwall charge. But to the game, a Charlton win, not attractive, but 2-1
I would be happy with that. It would take Kermit and Jackson to storm straight back to their best for us to have any chance of winning and I cannot see that happening within a month or so. I didn't tip Wigan for promotion but they should reach the play-offs unless they have a tiring run in Europe.
Actually, he is being quite accurate. Under communism entry charges for all sorts of entertainment and cultural attractions were kept very low so everyone could afford them. My Latvian girlfriend was bitterly complaining that "the new capitalist government" had raised the price of a good seat at the ballet from 5 pounds (equivalent) to 12 pounds. In London a similar seat for equivalent quality would have been 50 pounds (or 80 from a tout once sold out).
Despite me being in attendance for this one, I'm going for a 2-0 win to us - the momentum is there at the moment and despite Wigan having a very strong squad, I fancy us for this.
..... only Eddie could complain about the cost of ballet..... to me the cost of ballet and opera is of no concern to the average working class person in the UK and neither of these elitist entertainment models should be supported from the public purse...... it's a bit like people complaining about the cost of going fox hunting. . . the game tomorrow, I quite fancy a back to back wins 3-1 (Kermit, Stephens, Church)
Taken from the Wiganer...... I'm not at all sure that this is correct? or in fact mathematically possible?
I have got season tickets, but am buying extras for tomorrow in an attempt to get other mugs hooked on CAFC. Generally speaking, I don't think people should be coerced to do things, especially when it panders to feelings like guilt. Why not make the tickets £6 ? The phrase "compulsory charity donation" gets my goat, and is the sort of thing you expect to see in North Korea.
On the subject of fox hunting, which should never have been banned in the first place ( class war by Blair), I was pleased to see that a partial amendment of the ban was discussed this week. Before the Mods get itchy...I am talking about foxes that support Millwall.
Yes, but the average wage in Latvia is £7,500 per year, which is why so many of them have come over here.
I guess this may be for VAT purposes, if they were to charge £6 for entry then the Club would have to deduct VAT from the £1 prior to passing the money to charities whereas if they say entry is £5 + £1 charity donation then the £1 can be passed to the charity without deduction
Football for a fiver or 6 quid= silly gimmick. Doesn't alter the fact that prices have gone up in the last year by more than a lot of regular fans can afford. It's the club which suffers too, due to the law of diminishing returns. I very much doubt whether we'll get anything like the same sort of atmosphere as we had against Forest, which helped pull the team out of a bit of a slump. May well be the same result, though.
Good old Charlton. Just been to the Valley to buy some tickets for tomorrow. Long queue, 25 min wait. Guess what...one person serving The Charlton lady said we have sold 24,000 so far
Well if all the staff didn't " leave" there would be more people to serve. I really do not like football for a fiver games. In the past the people around me just don't want to be there. There may be more people in the Stadium but the atmosphere seems to be worse.
