I'm not sure that argument would hold up.

Members of the police a combatant?

My Da's mate was 22 or so and had just joined the police, shot right in the back of the head by some IRA fella simply for wearing a uniform.

Difficult to call him a combatant for just doing a job.

Is anyone even doubting that happened from time to time?

Well with the exception of one.

    No.

No one is disputing it happened from time to time.

Should those responsible now be brought to account for it?

Didn't we just establish that 'just doing a job' was often colluding with Loyalist terrorists (or maybe not doing anything while Bombay street was fire bombed, or giving Ian Paisley an armed escort as he marched up the Falls to take down an Irish tricolour, or beat down Civil Rights marchers on their way to Derry in 1968, with televised pictures showing three unarmed British Labour MPs being beaten to the ground - all before 1969 before PIRA even existed).

I remember a Tweet from a fella called Mohamed El Baradei (a director of the international atomic energy agency) in January 2011 predicting chaos in Arab regions (which I just found on Google again):

"Tunisia: repression + absence of social justice + denial of channels for peaceful change = a ticking bomb."

With hindsight it's really not difficult to see why Northern Ireland erupted. The difference between Unionism and Nationalism is that Unionism likes to ignore the reasons why it erupted and Nationalism likes to shy away from what happened when it did erupt.

No. I would say the police men and women trying to do an honest job during the troubles far outweigh the ones that colluded with murder gangs.

Not really. A soldier and a policeman are 2 different jobs.

Disagree. Soldiers know that more than likely they will have to kill, that is their job. Do you think every copper thinks that they are gonna have to kill someone?

Likewise, I might shock you by saying I knew some IRA men who were not at all sectarian. A bit lefty Marxist for my liking, but believed that their cause was morally correct as it was about removing inequality. Just like the Police men who thought upholding the law was morally correct, even if that law was set by a one-sided state which had had a 50 year single party rule.

Of course not, but this thread is not about every copper though, it's about underhanded dealings that happened during troubled time. For sure there was some skulldugery went on, it's natural, and would happen everywhere in circumstance like them.

And I knew some UVF & UDA men who weren't sectarian either. Collusion happened and we'll just have to wait and see what this evidence says.

Yeah but your response was to my point about my Da's mate getting executed simply for being a peeler.
