Gus Poyet will put his Sunderland players under scrutiny in training this week as he rethinks his starting XI ahead of the Wear-Tyne derby.

Poyet was dismayed at the way his side collapsed after falling behind at Swansea at the weekend, as the Black Cats ended up on the wrong end of a 4-0 scoreline – their heaviest defeat of the season.

And after setting out his intention to keep a settled side where possible, the manner of the defeat at Swansea means Poyet will go back to the drawing board and look for players who have grasped his footballing philosophy.

That could see midfielder Ki Sung-Yueng – who was ineligible at Swansea, but will be available for the derby – and centre-back Wes Brown come into the frame, as could Cabral and Modibo Diakite, who both played for the U21s at the weekend.

Poyet said: “I need to pick the team that is good enough to do it with my ideas.

“There’ve been plenty of changes and unfortunately something happened in the second half at Swansea which affected the team.

“We need strong characters to go in there and react to adversity.”

Poyet is also keen to avoid playing players out of position, wherever possible.

“At this moment in time, when we’re going back to basics, it’s important to have players in their natural positions,” he added.

Thats all well and good, then why pick Bardo at left back and drop Jack??

    ------------ Westwood --------------

    Celustka - Brown - Roberge - Colback

    ----- Cattermole -- Cabral -----------

    Johnson -------- Ki ------- Giaccherini

    -------------- Fletcher ----------------

    Subs

    Mannone
    Diakite
    Dossena
    Gardner
    Karlsson
    Mavrias
    Altidore

This would be my team against the mags. Karlsson nearly got in but Johnson's last performance against Newcastle, kept him his place.

Wont happen. Colback claims to be a natural midfielder, so he wont be starting at LB.

Ignoring Bardsley's casio and 1st game antics, I dont think he should be played for the simple reason that he offers nothing going forward. AJ, for all his faults, had no support down the wing against swansea cos bardsley is a traditional FB.

    Westwood

    Celustka, Brown, Roberge, Dossena

    Cattermole, Colback

    AJ, Ki, Giac

    Fletch

    Subs:

Mannone, Diakite, O'Shea, Gardner, Cabral, Maviras, Alitidore

Not only would I play that against the mags, I think it's our strongest team on paper for the philosophy we want to implement and not a single player out of position. Rep mate.

O'Shea's natural position, at Man Utd, was on the bench ........

He was a useful hole filler from the bench when he was younger and could still run!

Back to basics ehh? Conceding two from corners and giving away one penalty.

    That worked.
