Have you ever been to the bunker at Bempton? - there's the RSPB Centre, massive cliffs and (as far as I can recall) a pub very close nearby:

We had a thread on the Drewton tunnels a while back, if you go on Google Maps you can still see all the vents in the fields for the steam train smoke.

I would add to the above that although they can sporadically be found (alongside some unmissable historic pubs in the old town) the city centre lacks any area with a genuine critical mass of restaurants, cafes and bars. For this you need to head to the avenues district about 10 minutes walk northwest of paragon station.

Can someone explain why there ever was a Hull to Barnsley railway line?

That's an interesting map. I was at Drax Grammar school in the early 60s and by that time the railway was closed. But they still ran occasional trains along it just to check the tracks. They also used to maintain the Swing Bridge near Drax over the river. Im havnt been back there for years and I don't know if the old swing Bridge is still there or not.l

It was the main railway line from the Barnsley coal fields to Hull where they exported a hell of a lot of coal from the docks.

But what about all the stations on the line? I suppose people could have used it just to go a few stops.

This is the badge on the old gate to Cannon Street station, the passenger terminus of the H&B. It was just across the road from Rose Downs & Thompsons - and I believe the site is now partly occupied by a Hull College building.

I don't think that's it - the line crosses the Ouse as it goes from Drax to Barmby. The Boothferry Bridge is quite a bit further down river.

There's still a swing bridge on the line in Selby, presumably it's that one then.

I'm getting to be a tad 'trainspotterish', I know, but the swing bridge at Selby is on the existing line, I think......
