Something I have spent far too long arguing with my Uncle about. Dancing Brave's Arc was probably the best race I have ever seen, but Frankel's Guineas was the best performance!
Frankel was treading water at the end against what can only be described as an atrocious field. DB powering away from the greatest Arc field ever assembled despite been given a pretty horrendous ride from Pat. Not really a tough choice eh
I think Frankel was looking for the other horses rather than treading water - had the race won at half way. Watch that Arc race again, and how can you say Eddery gave him a horrendous ride? Had him where he wanted him all race, switched off at the back and produced him at exactly the right time - a superb ride!!
Not only have i watched that Arc about a million times but i was actually a small boy when my dad took me. Anyway, Pat rode an awful race in the KG as he hit the front too soon and idled. And as far as the Arc goes,to be taken that far wide in a field of that magnitude was terrible, only the outstanding brilliance of DB won that race
Does Frankel’s 2000 Guineas qualify as a “race”? It was a procession. He hit the gates and went and the remainder fought out second place. I suppose hindsight is a great thing as we now know that none of them had a chance. The 2012 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot might as well have been posted as the “race” representing Frankel because at least he had not won that after a hundred yards! The way that Dancing Brave destroyed one of the best Arc fields ever assembled (winners of four ‘Derby’s in the field: Bering, Shahrastani and Acatenango) to win going away back on the bridle surely makes that the better of the two options offered.
That was his brief though - Starkey did exactly the same in the Derby but left it too late - Eddery got his timing spot on!!
