Does gustsvo's cry change your opinion :

GUS POYET has asked Sunderland supporters to give Phil Bardsley a second chance after bringing the defender back into the fold.

Bardsley was ostracised by Poyet’s predecessor Paolo Di Canio after he was pictured in a casino at the end of last season, celebrating Sunderland’s Premier League survival.

The former Manchester United man spent the summer training with the Under-21s, but then further antagonised fans by mocking Sunderland’s opening day defeat to Fulham.

Bardsley was suspended by the club and issued a public apology after he was fined heavily.

But new head coach Poyet has decided that Bardsley will be given a clean slate under his regime and has pleaded for fans to follow his lead.

Poyet told the Echo: “I have decided, with the backing of the club of course, that he (Bardsley) is a part of the club and he is available to play.

“I ask the fans, with respect, to please give him a chance because he could be very, very important for us.

“He is very happy – delighted – to have another chance. He knows what he did was wrong, but it is in the past so let’s all try and put it behind us.

“Of course, he needs to make sure there are no more mistakes because then it would be impossible.

“But he will have a chance, and he could play an important part.”

Bardsley has been back in full training with the first-team at the Academy of Light this week after recovering from a broken foot sustained playing for the U21s in August.

The 28-year-old could be in contention for this weekend’s trip to Swansea, although Poyet may decide to ease him back into action by giving him a run-out for the U21s against Chelsea, at the Stadium of Light on Saturday lunchtime.

Poyet added: “He is fit now.

“I will make a final decision tomorrow over who will go to Swansea.

“Everybody will come in ready to travel, and I will decide then (whether Bardsley goes with the first-team squad to Wales).”

Who agrees with Gus Poyet wiping the slate clean for PB??You could argue that he was getting paid a fortune for doing nothing and he should work for his wages, but who will forget how he took the pi** out of our club who employ him??Who is right, lads and lasses??

I personally took his quotes as a swipe against PDC, not the club, if that's the case then welcome back and get stuck in. If I'm wrong and it was a swipe against the club then terminate his contract.

I think it was the former and as a player he has always given 110%, not the most technically gifted player but always gives his all which we need right now.

**** it! What's done is done. Ancient history. We've got a new regime and a clean slate.

He's a proper full back. No point cutting our nose off to spite our face. If he can do the job as good as if not better than he did before then it's one less position to worry about.

Just no big cheers when his name's called out before the game. He needs to know he's got to win us over again and best way he can do that is put the performances in!

If he scores the winner in the derby I'll drive him to the casino and pay for his drinks, don't know about throwing 50 pound notes at him though.

    My feelings also.
I don`t agree with booing him but there are plenty who won`t be able help themselves.

It`s going to take something really special to get the fans back on his side and personally, I don`t think he`s good enough to do it.

If, as has been suggested, it was a personal swipe at PDC, then how long before he takes a personal swipe at Gus? What then? An apology and one more last chance?

In my view, in his complete disregard and disrespect for the club and the fans (twice) he`s gone way too far and the club missed an opportunity to set an example.

So it`s a no from me as, imo, he should no longer be a Sunderland player.

His form was crap anyway, so that's got to improve before he is reintegrated. No form and bad off the field decisions? He's got his work cut out.

Poyet may just be putting him in the shop window.

I can't understand why that would be excusable. He's still mocked our club to get at him. We're not a pawn in his childish games(well we are apparently, welcomed back with open arms in some quarters). He's not fit to wear the shirt imo

That last point could be valid but I'm not so sure. He'll know about him and what he did and would probably be as disgusted as most of us are, but IMO, as a manager he can't afford to think that way. He'll see a quick short term solution to a problem and make that decision and if that puts a few noses out of joint then so be it.

You could be right about about the shop window though. He may still be gone in January.

I think Poyet is quite a clear thinking manager and wants to 'draw a line' under the past.

He's also telling other 'renegades', like Cattermole, JOS etc, that we're all in the same boat now and past divisions & cliques are finished.

However, Bardsley mocked the club and therefore the supporters who'll exist long after he's forgotten.
If a Newcastle player had made the comment about our start to the season he'd never be forgiven.

I won't forgive Bardsley but I won't boo him unless he's absolutely ****e on the pitch .......... which, sadly, is a possibility.
He'll certainly be booed quicker than he otherwise would after his stupidity.

There are 3 people in our team I wouldn't ever think of messing with - Bardsley, Cattermole and Gardner - all hard as nails!!

I hate what he did to the us after the Fulham game - BUT - if he plays and we get on his back will that benefit SAFC? Certainly not - so if he pulls on a red and white shirt then I will support him! Draw a line under it and that's it

He can f&ck off for me aswell. Anyone who mocks our clubs a w@nker in my eyes nevermind one of our own players, who earns over 100k a month from our pockets.

Hes not even as good as Bards and Celuskta anyway!

Regardless of what he's done. Can we all just remember that he just isn't very good.

Has had 2 good seasons - and one of them was in the Championship! BUt, as I said - I won;t like him playing for our club but I will not get on his back while he plays - the club is far far bigger than Phil Bardsley and also far bigger than my "pissed offness"! with him so the team that are playing must come first. His only chance of reprisal would be a hat-trick against the mags!!
