Roy Hodgson's side have thus far safely navigated their way through qualifying, which has left them knowing a win in their final match is enough for a place at the finals. Poland cannot finish in the top two and so qualification is beyond them, but they will be looking to spoil the English party at Wembley, where nearly 20,000 fans will be cheering them on. When it comes to Poland and Wembley, of course England's memories are drawn to 1973 when Jan Tomaszewski inspired his side to a 1-1 draw which was enough to seal their place at the 1974 World Cup finals and cost Sir Alf Ramsey his job. Since 1973, England have played Poland 15 times and they are undefeated in that period, collecting nine wins. In their last 11 games against Poland, England have only failed to score once and, with 29 goals in their current campaign, only Holland and Germany have scored more in qualifying. The majority of the capacity crowd on Tuesday will be expecting to celebrate qualification to Brazil and hoping to avoid a repeat of not just 1973, but also 2007, which was the last time Wembley hosted an England decider for a major tournament when they lost 3-2 to Croatia.
Team news: England, England are without their first choice right-backs in Glen Johnson and Kyle Walker, with the latter missing out due to a yellow card picked up against Montenegro on Friday. Manchester United duo Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are in contention to take the spot, with the former appearing favourite to get the nod. Left-back Ashley Cole remains sidelined with a rib injury so Leighton Baines will continue in his place. Friday's hero was debutant Andros Townsend, who shone on the right of midfield, and although he picked up a knock in the game he looks likely to maintain his place. Captain Steven Gerrard will start in central midfield, but it remains to be seen if Roy Hodgson will stick with Frank Lampard or give a chance to Jack Wilshere or Michael Carrick. ------------------------------ Poland, Poland are set to make at least one change from their side which lost 1-0 in Ukraine on Friday. Steaua Bucharest central defender Lukasz Szukala picked up a booking and is therefore suspended for the game, and he has not travelled to England. Another Romanian based player, right-back Piotr Celeban of Vaslui, is set to get his chance. If Celeban does start then Artur Jedrzejczyk will switch to central defence. Trabzonspor's Adrian Mierzejewski is also in contention to come into the side with Matesuz Klich likely to miss out. Pawel Wszolek will not be involved as he has been sent to the Under-21 squad to take on Turkey.
The DJ in the Cheese asked someone on Saturday how many travelling fans he thought Poland were taking. The bloke said "20,000?". Phil said "Nah, 57". The bloke said "57,000?!". Phil said "Nah, 57. The rest are all here anyway"
The only time you lads have done anything at the WC, is when you fielded a team full of Englishmen. #bitter
When does the international transfer window open? England should offer Uruguay $20 mill plus Rooney for Suarez. With SAS England would win world cup.
Can have a pole (no pun intended) on which Liverpool player will be vilified by the press if England don't win tonight? My odds are:- 2/1 Gerrard 3/1 Sturridge 4/1 Sterling 10/1 Johnson 20/1 John Barnes Evens Suarez
