Mackem Effect and myself have just been disgussing on the '40k thread' the last day defeat at Maine Road which sent us down.
I recalled the unbelievable away support that day and the fact that on returning to our coach at Worsley, all the windows had been put thru.
Nevertheless the whole coach sang & drank ALL the way back up the A1...
What a day .. Regardless of the disappointing result.

What's your BEST 'Away Day'... And why ?!

I'm expecting a few 14 April 2013..... And rightly so !! (Unless you are a horse that is!!)

Christ..There has been so many over the years it is hard to single one out...The biggest away following I have been in for a league game was when we took 20,000 to Villa Park in a promotion decider which Villa won 2-0 in front of an almost 60,000 crowd..However, my all time favourite must be when we beat the Mags 2-0 away in the play offs, for so many reasons, including how well the Skunk fans took this defeat..<whistle>

My first two were the best for differing reasons Villa and Liverpool 81/82 ish, got humped by Villa 4-0/1 but beat the Scousers 1-0 Stan Cummins penalty at our end if I remember rightly.
Also went to a Millwall away game at Southend which was a good laugh think that one finished 2-2.

Milk Cup SF 2nd leg at Stamford Bridge - a terrifying but brilliant night.
1-3 to the lads, fans being chased off the pitch by police horses.

    Clive Walker reigned supreme!!!
    Shame about the final!!!

I had travelled up from Portsmouth that afternoon..although I had been refused permission to do so (I was a trainee at HMS Mercury Royal Navy Scool of Communications).
They said I wouldn't get back in time for my early shift on the Main Gate at 0600.

They were right and as a result of being 4 hrs late I was charged with..
    1. Being adrift
    2. Direct disobedience to a senior officer.
I was given 28 days in Detention Quarters thus missing the final...

Worth every minute of it .... as that walk from Sids Park to the train station will live with me forever.

Toss a coin between nags 0-2 playoffs and barnsley 0-1 with peter in charge, quinny in goal down to 10 men, never forget the silence amongst us and then it went up 'we're by far the greatest team'

Hillsborough v norwich was madness aswell

Could we class the play off final as one lads another top game if you forget about the scoreline?

I remember that Man City game. Sunderland fans took over a pub before the game (The Queen of Hearts?) about a mile away from Maine Road and the place was lifting. The faces of any Man City fans who ventured in were a picture. Cracking game and atmosphere even though we lost and were relegated. Still pissed off that 10 players in Sunderland shirts sweated blood for the team that day - while Keiron Brady hardly broke sweat.

Cardiff, 80-81 ish. They put the prices up the sheep shagging tw*ts. Cost them money tho cos the gates went in and so did we. Had almost 3 sides of Ninian park. I think it was Jeff Clarke broke his leg that day.
Off licence outside was very generous as well providing free alcohol for the bus home. Not sure the vendor was aware he was going to do that but was jolly decent of him. The bus driver that day must have been related to Vettel cos we still got back into town before 11.

For sheer pleasure, a 2-1 midweek win over Port Vale in a promotion season. Turned up in Burslem and got refused by the town centre pubs, so we strolled about 1/4 of a mile out of town, found a nice little boozer and played pool and drank for about an hour before KO. Strolled back up to the game, Tony Norman saved a pen, good banter with the locals, nice drive home.

Almost relaxing, that. Imagine following Sunderland being relaxing... :)

Travelling down to Hillsborough I remember seeing Monty standing on the hard shoulder of the motorway - his reflexes weren't what they used to be and he'd driven into the back of another car.

Just checked..And Quinn definitely went in goal against Bradford away after Tommy went off injured, and we still won 1-0..Not sure if he done the same against Barnsley, but I can't find any record of it..

Went to Rotherham a couple of years ago in the cup tonked them 5-0 (I think), couldn't get served in the town centre so wandered to the ground as we heard there was a bar there. Got rained on sleeted hailstoned the lot that day, eventually decided to go up to some housing estate about a mile from the ground first bar welcomed with open arms big fire going the lot. Got talking to the barmaid/owner (not sure) and she said the bars around the ground were expecting 1000s turning up wanting a drink.
