I read a book review last Saturday - Mark Lewisohn's The Beatles – All These Years: Volume One: Tune in

When I read this paragraph, it set me thinking.....just which record (and sound) changed the world for me? It was also 'Heartbreak Hotel' - my best mate's sister had a copy. We were both schoolboys and she saw us as irritating oiks; wouldn't let us get our hands on her records; but played them to annoy us. The world changed with Elvis' record....

The excitement of early rock'n'roll records – not least in a city still smattered with bombsites – can only begin to be imagined. When Lennon heard Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel", "it just broke me up. I mean, that was the end. My whole life changed from then on, I was just completely shaken by it." Little Richard's "Long Tall Sally", he said, was "so great I couldn't speak". McCartney's first record was Gene Vincent's "Be Bop A-Lula", all nonsense-words and space‑age echo. "The whole song is purple in my mind because of the purple Capitol label," he said.

    Interesting thread.

I wouldn't say it was one song for me.

I suppose it was watching Top Of The Pops during the 90s that got me hooked. Probably around all that Blur v Oasis rivalry- to this day I still dislike Blur.

This blew my 8 year old mind to pieces. It seemed like the greatest thing ever created.

Only a few Chaz didn't want to bore everyone to tears, hope you get there, but I believe Pricilla sold Gracelands to some big corporation to secure the future of Lisa Marie, so not sure if anything has changed.

For me shine on you crazy diamond by pink Floyd is a special song and it's changed my music tastes forever. I do wish was around when Elvis and the Beatles and Hendrix were doing their thing.
