Sunderland have reportedly promised Gus Poyet significant funds to spend in the January transfer window after confirming him as their new manager.

Poyet has signed a two-year-deal with the Black Cats to succeed Paolo Di Canio after a fortnight of speculation.

The former Brighton manager takes over at a club who are rock bottom of the Premier League, with a squad that is desperately short on confidence.

But according to reports in the north East, Sunderland owner Ellis Short has promised Poyet he will get a large transfer kitty to turn things around in the new year.

It’s thought the American could make around £30million available for new signings, with avoiding relegation integral to the club and the lucrative sponsorship deals that Short has been working on.

As well as being tasked with keeping Sunderland up, Poyet has also been told he must work closely with sporting director Roberto De Fanti to bring a new brand of football to the Stadium of Light.

Poyet is famed for introducing a pass-and-move style to Brighton’s game and he must now do the same after taking over at Sunderland.

Personally think this is b*llocks. Why would a chairman/manager tell the world what he has to spend. Would result in inflated prices for players etc. Another lazy effing journo imo.

Not bad going - appointed on Tuesday and promised huge finance on Wednesday - total rubbish.

there will be some cash available but given that ellis has been a bit more tight with the wallet i would be surprised if it was anywhere near 30 mill. its hard to get value in january unless the players contract is running down

Whatever happens they need to sign quality. Giacc, Fletcher that sort of quality we don't need anymore squad players.

Why is this even news? With a net spend of fa in the closed season, who, except for Ellis and co, are to say that 30mil wasn't available to PDC?

If I was a billionaire prem club owner, I'd be playing the long game and have expenditure planned over a number of years.

This is not 'new' money. It's always been there. It's just a different face that will benefit from it <hopefully>.

Journalists boil my ****ing piss. I'm not thick so don't write ****e like I am ffs.

I agree LiV we need the quality but with that many players out of contract at the end of the season we will be signing 5-6 run of the mill players again unless youth is given a chance.

Any money which isn't in housed financed is "new money" If Ellis going to plough in any more of his own cash no matter whether it's planned or not, it's all new money.

Yes, but this 'new money' was always available. It's just 'money' it's not 'new'.

Ellis proved this In his statement about remaining in the prem. It's far too costly not to.

The article is written such that Poyet had negotiated a new pot. Not the case, never was imo.

No mate..Any money the club generates itself (player sales, sponsorship etc) is classed as old money. It's the extras that Ellis or anyone else for that matter contributes over and above that is classed as "new money". And that is what FIFA are clamping down on with their new rules.

My opinion aside then. If I am a prem club owner and my business is about to loose a large proportion of it's income, I am forbidden to buy?

Having read about Ellis and his previous business exploits, I'm sure he has allocated funds, regardless of fifa rules. I know I would.

Lets all face it. If there is a chance we can stay up, then money will be available. If we are looking like we are down, then the shuffle will happen in may/ june.

    Poor reporting. Logic rules

It would be really weird if Di Canio (as new manager in the summer) was allowed to spend a net £1m, and then Gus is allowed to spend a net £30m.

More likely this is nonsense and Di Fanti will still have the say on who we sign and how much we pay.

Think we had money to spend the whole time. Freeing up space on the wage bill will have been a condition before bringing in others. We have Sess' wages free but this maybe the first indication that some of the lads in their last year may be offered out cut price. Cuellar first out for me and replace him with the center back I still wanted before the window closed. Vaughan, Larsson and Ji can be sent packing too along with bardo. If we can get shot of that rot and free their wages then happy days.

Really struggling on how simplistic I need to get but I'll give it a go.
Sell a player for 100M..Old money. Get a sponsorship for 100M..Old money. Sell a billion pies for 100M..Old money. Ellis gives us 100M..New money.
In Short...(parden the pun). Any money the club hasn't earned is New money.

I know what you mean fella but shouldn't there be plenty of old money from the new tv deal, was supposed to be a **** load. Our net spend was only a million. We do need to take into account the new recruitment system set up including the hiring of staff. But surely there's plenty of money. It's just waiting for wages to free so that we're still running in the black (persuming he's managed to balance the books with the wages he's cut in the summer)

The TV deal does sound great. All these Millions going into our coffers but alas it's a false dawn.
Simple fact is if I gave you 100M your rich, Write? But if I gave your bigger neighbour 200M in real terms your getting poorer. Thats how the Sky money has worked. And that's why we will never compete for English League again without massive new money. Same as every other club outside the Sky six

True it means we've got less than others to strengthen but it doesn't mean we've got nothing. We should have some money to spend. Up to us to get value for our money.
