I'd say our god-awful defence had more to do with that statistic than Kasper. Using goals conceded to argue over who is a better keeper is naiive to say the least.
Much as someone saying Ruddy is awful when thay've hardly seen him is naiive. He's actually a keeper who has improved considerably.
I agree with Simon 21, I don't like Ruddy as a keeper. However in the prem your goal is gunna come under attack. It'll put ruddy to the test and you see the less big club's keepers step up and make fantastic saves during a game e.g. hennessey, al habsi. There wasnt only game in the championship that I thought ruddy got us the points (that fantastic penalty save against swansea at home at 2-0 up). I just hope ruddy will step up his game. I can see him in his first game making critical mistakes like the everton friendly game last season 3 goals conceded due to him out of 4. and you cant rate a keeper on number of goals conceded even though they do have a responsibility of control in the area. We all know Casillas is a better keeper than V.valdes However; Casillas goals conceded = 31 Valdes goals conceded = 21
Why oh why the negativity? We've just won back to back promotions, gained for us by the whole team, players and management! God, do you post on the Pink'un? Do you phone Canary call? Wow
no and no. I'm just giving my opinion on the keeper position. All the positivity has been covered on other posts. this is one position one player and one position. If you want my opinion on the rest of the the team here it is; Attack - very good, plenty of competition and hunger for places and plenty off goals. Midfield - certainly needs bennett in it for the ability to go past a player (only wes can really do this) and some more strength in depth for when injuries start to play their part so johnson and snodgrass = perfect midfield for me. Defence - Need 2 new centre backs, one for competition with whitbread and barnett and the other to start, I dont think ward can cut it (fouls too much and will be undone by the pace of the premier league). Cover/ competition at right back and the same at left back (drury i see as more of someone in the dressing room, giggs like. Seems to have lost a yard of pace but im sure can still challenge for a starting place). I think we need another keeper for competition.
"I think we need another keeper for competition. " Many City fans would agree with that viewpoint, and have openly stated as much, but it's not an excuse for (yet more) Ruddy-bashing.
I have no problem with having another keeper for back up and competition, but from a shaky start, Ruddy was in contention for player of the season, the main thing that worked against him early on was crowd pressure voicing their preference for Forster! Once he got over that he improved beyond all recognition
I think most of this Ruddy-bashing has come from the post saying he could be in with a chance for england next season. I certainly didn't take it seriously and agreed with those bringing peoples expectations of him back down to earth. Ruddy isn't world class, Joe Hart however I believe is. I'd put ruddy about 8 places down the pecking order for england's number one.
The guy's only 24! He's improved immeasurably, mainly as was said, once he'd got over the 'Forster factor'. The last thing we need is some Leeds fans, who have obviously hardly seen him, saying he's awful. We seem to have enough of our own fans saying that!
Blimey, this is the second time I've had to explain that thread, something I thought was really straightforward. It's not saying Ruddy is an international class goalkeeper, any one with half a brain knows he isn't. There was no claim anywhere about being England's number one!!!! It's simply that with the Euro's at the end of next season, you'll have to be playing top flight next year to get in the squad. Therefore, as one of only five English keepers likely to be playing, he'd be in with a chance of being called up (as third choice!!). That is all. It's as much about the lack of English keepers as it is about Ruddy.
I don't recall John Ruddy making a mistake in any matches which weren't friendlies. I do however recall some epic, often point winning saves. So what's the problem? Ruddy is one of the players I'm more sure is Premier League material.
Canariez - you're entitled to your opinion, no matter how far off the mark it may be! Schmichael has moments of sheer brilliance, interspaced with periods of running around like a headless chicken
If it weren't for Ruddy, we may not even be in the Premier League. The one game that stands out all season is Swansea at home. Ruddy doesn't make that penalty save, I have no doubt we would of lost that game. That's not the only game he saved us in either. Sure he made mistakes but as dave said, everybody was comparing him to Forster at the start of the season and his home form was markedly worse than his away form. When people started to get behind him at Carrow Road, he improved there also. Most improved player in the squad from those early Championship days. Give the guy a chance. If he starts the season badly we still have 2 weeks to bring in another keeper before the window closes.
