Fulham have made Rene Meulensteen an offer to join the club's coaching team.
The former Manchester United coach has been out of work since his departure from Anzhi Makhachkala.
But Sportsmail understands the Dutchman has been offered a route back to the Premier League by the Craven Cottage club, which would see him form part of Martin Jol's staff.
Meulensteen met Fulham chiefs for dinner towards the back end of September and the highly-respected coach impressed during talks.
Discussions over a move for Sir Alex Ferguson's right-hand man have progressed steadily over recent days, culminating in Fulham's offer.
Meulensteen will mull over the offer during the next 48 hours before deciding whether to join the West London club, but Fulham are said to be hopeful of a positive conclusion.
The coach is understood to have a number of coaching opportunities in the United Arab Emirates, which are believed to be more lucrative than Fulham's offer.
But Meulensteen is said to be keen on a return to England.

Our club isn't set up for a manager mate, It's set up for a coach. The Job title of our last Head Coach was a dead give away. :p

He's had an interview with us so doubt he'll accept a lower role until he's found out the result of his application. I'm not chalking him off just yet.

My personal view is that In your current mess you need a manager, not a coach. A coach type appointment is fine when your starting a new project but currently you're in danger of being adrift and already desperate for points so leadership is needed.

Looking at teams which have been in a dogfight and escaped, Aston Villa had John Gregory, West ham had Curbishley, Portsmouth had Redknapp, Newcastle had Kevin Keegan.

My club spurs had Redknapp but we was in a false position anyway.

Hodgson saved Fulham. Bryan Robson saved West Brom.

As you can see none are coaches, they are managers in the traditional sense and thats what you need to stop you being relegated.

Think he has gone for a chat as Jol got a stay of execution this weekend and, the Fulham board are gearing up for his sacking by bringing in someone now to get to know the players/staff etc. So if Jol does get the hook there will be a ready made replacement in place and, if not they get a more than decent assistant/coach.

Fergie was so impressed by him as a coach when he saw him, he hired him!

But as people say hes a coach not a manager, too much of a risk with our current situation, it would make no sense.
