Why? I obviously don't agree with someone going on Facebook and calling random black people '******' or a 'wog'. I also don't agree with people of any colour trying to stifle legitimate conversation on certain race-related topics by screaming 'RACIST!' at anyone who tries to start one. It is unhealthy and does far more harm than good.

Add to that the Black lawyers as well JWM. Their spokesman is certainly getting a fair bit of exposure recently.

Incredibly difficult to answer that fully. It depends how much you buy into the notion that certain socioeconomic groups are disadvantaged by historical events, and to to what extent.
Some would argue positive discrimination/affirmative action is necessary as we have not yet reached a good enough standard of equality as a society .

Erik, I'm sure you don't at all condone the comment on facebook.

I'm just a little troubled by you saying your advice to someone preferring not to be referred to as 'coloured' being to tell them to "grow a pair".

Blacks in the UK are immigrants who came here willingly. They are not, as in the US, freed slaves. How often have you met a Jew who got turned down for a job and blamed Nazism or the Holocaust? How often have you met an Indian on benefits who blamed the British Raj? None. It's always the same culprits playing the victim, and it makes me both angry at and sorry for them.

Maybe the problem is pretending that a) everyone is the same, be they a native Briton, a third-generation Persian Muslim or a Congolese straight off the [definitely not banana because that would be racist] boat, and b) that there are equal numbers of these ethnic groups (some say this is 'judging by London Rules')

It irks me that a black man can sit there and say how horrible it is that his ancestors were slaves, and in the next moan about some old biddy using the word 'coloured'. Maybe 'grow a pair' was a poor choice of words. Try, 'get a sense of ****ing perspective'. Actually, I'd throw 'grow a pair' in there too. It simply isn't offensive.

I would hope that in the cold light of day both Gandy and Rob would reconsider, both add to the colour and character of this forum in their own unique ways, and Gandy is obviously a top bloke too, it would be a shame to see either of them leave. <ok>

Isn't the whole point though that all forms of discrimination should be outlawed if we are to live in a genuinely harmonious society? Surely groups that reinforce the skin colour, ethnicity or sexual orientation of a group of individuals work's against what we are trying to achieve as a wider society! We don't have a 'hetrosexual police officers association' so why should there be a 'gay and lesbian police officers association'? Why if we all want equality should we allow any group to highlight difference?

I would say the assumption is that due to the upper ranks of most police forces being straight, Middle class White men, the opinions and requirement of this groups are already well, if not over, represented.

I understand your point here, but I can't really agree or disagree as I cannot say that I truly can relate to what a black/gay/transgender/handicapped etc. person has had to go through during their life. I consider myself extremely privileged and have pretty much every opportunity to make myself successful.

Transgenders repulse me. I never want to meet one, I never want to even see one. I don't care much for what they have to go through.

Johnny, you're being so naive. Haven't you realised that to those who are critical of a group/race/etc, we're all the same. To those who delude themselves with notions of sameness and equality, we're all 'diverse'... <rofl> It'd be funny if it wasn't so sad...

So is this group less deserving than others? Do you see what I'm trying to get at here? It does feel that if you are a straight, middle class, white man in this country, you are made to feel guilty and bad about being so! I remember Greg Dyke's infamous comments when he became DG at the BBC when he said that 'the BBC was hideously White and middle class!' Surely comments like this are not at all helpful and if we want to see genuine equality we must provide ALL people with equal opportunities and not seek to divide people into stereo typical groups.

Tbh i wasn't really commenting on wether that was a good thing or not, just why I perceive there isn't a "white police officers club". I wasn't saying they were less deserving just that there are lots of them making decisions already so there is no need for a "white police officers" group because they already run the thing. The argument against is that in reality these people are never acting solely in the interest of white people or straight people as they could never get away with it. Maybe questions do need to be asked about wether the police should be thinking in terms of a black officer and a white officers.

    Wow,

    You seem absolutely charming.

Tell me why do you think homophobic and transgender abuse is ok?

Actually don't bother it won't make any sense.

Nothing wrong with gay people whatsoever, though I try and avoid the really fruity ones.

Transgenders, on the other hand, are an abomination. Tell me why you think they're OK?

Actually, don't bother. It won't make any sense.
